  • Not Just Tourists

    Laurie Occhipinti•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2016

In communities around the world, participants in short-term mission trips pour cement, teach children English, provide medical care, and serve meals, seeking to “serve the poor.” Like many tourists, short-term missionaries seek new experiences, personal transformation, and a broader understanding of the world. A number of scholars examining the short-term mission phenomenon have drawn on the substantial theoretical work on tourism to understand a…

  • Faith Based Organizations and the Neoliberal State

    Open Access•Laurie Occhipinti•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 14

One of the fundamental tenets and practices of neoliberalism in Argentina was the withdrawal of the state from providing a range of social services to its citizens. The economic imperative of reducing spending coincided with an ideological push to limit the size of the state. Faith based organizations (FBOs) were among the actors who stepped in to fill the gap left by the retraction of services such as basic education and health care. In Argentin…

    Open Access•Laurie Occhipinti•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2003

  • Being Kolla

    Laurie Occhipinti•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Latin…•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Using a case study of the Kolla in Argentina, this paper considers how indigenous identity may be constructed, practiced, and imagined in Latin America. People in the northwestern highlands have only recently begun to reclaim an identity as "indigenous" people. Reimagining their identity has been highly contested by the larger society. Nationally, the image of Argentina as a "European" nation denies the inclusion of indigenous peoples. Moreover, …

  • Two Steps Back

    Laurie Occhipinti•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•1996•Cited by: 5
