This special issue of Scottish Affairs is the first to be solely dedicated to matters relating to Scotland's Gàidhealtachd. Scottish Affairs has a broad, interdisciplinary readership and this informs our approach as guest editors for the special issue. As such, the focus for the issue is to be future-oriented, whilst necessarily being informed by cultural context, contemporary society and lived experience. By curating the articles in these terms,…

  • Our Pluriverse and Gàidhealtachd: Emplacing Ethical Relations

    Open Access•James H Oliver, James Oliver•ARTICLE•Scottish Affairs•2021•References: 5

In this brief essay, to conclude the special issue, I take a reflexive and ontological (re)turn to the Gàidhealtachd. After completing our main task of bringing this collection together, an emplaced and ontological turn has been in some measure evident across the articles, emphasising relationships with place/s. In writing up our guest editors' introduction, a related emergent theme, or atmosphere, of place and ontological relations within the Gà…

This article is a discussion on cultural identity and belonging, focusing on some examples of people who are articulating or 'doing' identity in the Scottish Hebrides. In particular, it explores a re-articulation of cultural identity and belonging, not as the essential root or representation of social inclusion but as an ongoing production or creation of social relations, processes and practices, including rootedness and connectedness. In doing s…

  • Scottish Gaelic Identities: Contexts and Contingencies

    Open Access•James H Oliver, James Oliver•ARTICLE•Scottish Affairs•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 3

On September 27* 2004 the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Bill was introduced to the Scottish Parliament. It is expected that the Bill, given the overwhelming cross-party support to secure the status of Gaelic in Scotland, will be enacted by the summer of 2005} In some respects, then, this law will be the end of a long road for Scottish Gaelic. A 'Gaelic Renaissance has been evolving in Scotland for several decades now, with the Gaelic language and cu…

  • Political factors in the fall of RolIs‐Royce

Open Access•Morris Davis, James Finerty et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Administration•1973

While economic and technological difficulties greatly reduced Rolls‐Royce's viability, its passing into receivership can be adequately explained only by invoking additional (and largely political) factors. In the absence of any automatic criteria for aborting a losing project, the Conservative government of the day responded to an abundance of consistently negative politioal implications. Unfortunately for its continued survival, the Rolls‐Royce …
