Still no archaeological evidence that Neanderthals created Iberian cave art
Illuminating the cave, drawing in black: Wood charcoal analysis at Chauvet-Pont d'Arc
A high-precision chronological model for the decorated Upper Paleolithic cave of Chauvet-Pont d’Arc, Ardèche, France
Significance We compiled a set of more than 250 radiocarbon dates related to the rock art, human activities, and bone remains in the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave (Ardèche, France) and derive a modeled absolute chronology of the human and cave bear occupations of this site, presented here in calendar years. It provides an insightful framework for the successive events that occurred in the cave during the Paleolithic period.
What Is Paleolithic Art: Cave Paintings and the Dawn of Human Creativity
Tracking in Caves: Experience Based Reading of Pleistocene Human Footprints in French Caves
Some of the painted caves in southern France preserve human footprints from the Ice Age of 17,000 years ago. Research has so far dealt with them sparsely and through a morphometric approach only. In 2013 three indigenous hunters/trackers from the Kalahari had an opportunity to read several spoor accumulations in four caves on the basis of their indigenous knowledge. As a result of this morpho-classificatory approach to track reading they produced…
Second Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for the Chauvetpont d'Arc Cave, Ardèche, France
The Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave is one of the most important sites for the study of the earliest manifestations and development of prehistoric art at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. Different dating techniques have been performed thus far (AMS 14 C, U/Th TIMS, 36 Cl dating) to model the chronological framework of this decorated cave. The cave yielded several large charcoal fragments, which enabled the opportunity for obtaining multiple dates;…
Introduction à un congrès qui fera date

The Discovery of a New Paleolithic Decorated Cave in Romania (Bihor Department)
The cave of Coliboaia, where parietal drawings were discovered on September 20, 2009 by five Romanian speleologists, is located in the Apuseni Mountains (Western Carpathians of Romania). Upper Paleolithic occupations are also known in the region
Introduction to a congress that marks a milestone
When Robert Bednarik, following the suggestion of Giriraj Kumar, asked me to organize the 2010 IFRAO congress on Pleistocene Art of the World, I was divided by two sentiments: my enthusiasm for the subject and my apprehension of the difficulty and enormity of the task. It had to take place in Europe, where Pleistocene art is best known and most spectacular. It could very well have been in Spain, and I admit that I hesitated. Pascal Alard, in char…

Rock Art: An Endangered Heritage Worldwide
The preservation of rock art, both as a cultural heritage and as an archaeological resource, is crucial. In addition to preserving the art, we must work to preserve the associated natural and cultural environments. Nondestructive recording of the physical attributes of the art must be accompanied by recording of the cultural aspects--the stories of the artists or their descendants (when available). Information from oral histories should be includ…
Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for Chauvet Cave
We present the first results of an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon intercomparison program on 3 different charcoal samples collected in one of the hearths of the Megaceros gallery of Chauvet Cave (Ardèche, France). This cave, rich in parietal decoration, is important for the study of the appearance and evolution of prehistoric art because certain drawings have been 14 C dated to the Aurignacian period at the beginning of the Upper…

Style, Chauvet and radiocarbon
The article by Bahn and Pettitt (above) carries the suggestion that the diverse dates obtained for Candamo in some way throw doubt on those for Chauvet and by implication on the performance of the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) at Yvette-sur-Gif (Gif). The authors respond. Readers might also like to note the article by Marian Scott and colleagues which follows

The Mind in the Cave - the Cave in the Mind: Altered Consciousness in the Upper Paleolithic
This brief overview argues that the evidence of the images themselves, as well as their contexts, suggests that some Franco-Cantabrian Upper Paleolithic cave art was, at least in part, intimately associated with various shamanic practices. Universal features of altered states of consciousness and the deep caves combined to create notions of a subterranean spirit-world that became, amongst other ritual areas, the location of vision quests
Paleoecology at La Riera (Asturias, Spain) [and Comments and Reply]
Excavations were conducted at La Riera to test hypotheses concerning variability among Upper Paleolithic/Mesolithic artifact assemblages and to define and begin to explain changing hunter-gatherer adaptations to the coastal region at the end of the Wurm and the beginning of the Holocene. The 36 strata contain assemblages that can be assigned to Aurignacian(?), Solutrean, Magdalenian, Azilian, and Asturian culture-stratigraphic units. However, the…
Thematic changes in Upper Palaeolithic art: A view from the Grotte Chauvet
Trustworthy dates on charcoal from the classic European painted caves have given a sharper view of images and their making in the later Palaeolithic. The new Grotte Chauvet has its own original themes, revealing a striking and an unexpected Aurignacian art with - again - dates from charcoal in which one can have confidence

Portable and Wall Art in the Volp Caves, Montesquieu-Avantès (Ariège)
The complex system of subterranean passages at Montesquieu-Avantès in the foothills of the central French Pyrenees through which the River Volp flows is conventionally divided into three caves, Le Tuc d'Audoubert to the west, Les Trois-Frères in the centre and Enlène to the east. While the east two are connected by a narrow corridor, no usable passage connects Tuc d'Audoubert with Trois-Frères and the only current means of access is by boat. At T…

The Cosquer Cave on Cape Morgiou, Marseilles
The discovery of Palaeolithic wall paintings and engravings in a cave whose entrance lies below the present sea-level near Marseilles has created considerable interest - and no little controversy. The paper describes and analyses the remarkable find, with special attention to its authenticity.During the Pleistocene there were large variations in sea-level under the influence of glaciations and inter-glacial warm episodes. During the Late Wurm gla…

The parietal art of the Late Magdalenian
While lively debate has gone on about the meaning and function of Palaeolithic parietal art, the intractable and essential questions of its dating have been less in the foreground. With Leroi-Gourhan's interpretations goes his identification of styles and their chronology, published in 1965. Now one period, the Late Magdalenian of his Style IV, is looked at closely with chronology in mind

La Grotte Cosquer (Cap Morgiou, Marseille)
In 1991 a huge chamber with numerous paintings and engravings was discovered by a professional deep-sea diver after a long (175 m) passage that sloped up from a narrow (1.30 m high) entrance situated 37 m under present sea-level. The art was preserved because the chamber happened to be high up enough not to have been flooded, but large numbers of paintings and engravings were most probably destroyed in the passage and in the lower part of the cha…

La statuette féminine de Monpazier (Dordogne)
This newly-found paleolithic feminine statuette was discovered in the South of Dordogne, on an open-air site which yielded perigordian and other artefacts. Its size is very short (5,5 cm), and it is made out of a hard and complex sort of rock, consisting mainly of limonite. Some of its features (slimness of its hips, real steatogygia) call to mind the outline of one of the Grimaldi statuettes. The importance bestowed upon its sexual characters (b…

Le réseau René Clastres de la Caverne de Niaux (Ariège)
An important new system was discovered in 1970 in the Cave of Niaux. In the centre of the system, 5 animals had been painted in black (3 bisons, 2 of which unfinished, one horse and one Mustela). The latter (a weasel ?) is unique in palaeolithic art. We could prove that the prints and the skeleton of a stone-marten, discovered in the same galleries, had probably nothing to do with the above-mentionned painting. Besides, four black lines were foun…
