  • Calypso and the Performance of Representational Politics

    Open Access•Susan Harewood•CHAPTER•2012

This chapter focuses on the intersection of representation in calypso performance, representation in calypso research, and representation in parliament. The chapter highlights the ways in which a particular discourse of citizenship shapes the ways in which calypso is thought about and how the democratic project in the English‐speaking Caribbean is imagined through calypso performance. The argument focuses on the productive nature of calypso resea…

  • Tings Brown

    Susan Harewood•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2010

In Barbados economic hardship has a color. Ask Barbadians ‘how're you doing?’ and, if things are difficult in any way they might answer, ‘Tings brown!’ This seems to be an especially appropriate phrase for this paper which explores the inter-relations between contemporary racialized identificatory strategies and economic hardship in the Caribbean. My interest is in exploring the challenges Caribbean citizens and governments face in trying to purs…

  • Metaphor and the Work of Cultural Studies

    Open Access•Susan Harewood•ARTICLE•Policy Futures in Education•2009•References: 13

This article examines the political project of Cultural Studies by calling for a re-examination of the cultural studies research practices. The metaphors used by cultural studies researchers are explored, as these demonstrate the ways in which researchers have sought to emphasize openness and fluidity. However, it is argued that the desire for openness is not enough; that without rigorous consideration of methodology Cultural Studies lays itself …

    Open Access•Susan Harewood•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2008•References: 1

This article examines the intersections of music policy and citizenship in the Caribbean island of Barbados. The article focuses on the development of music policy from the late 1970s to the early 2000s. It is argued that it is possible to trace efforts made by Barbadian state managers to shape citizenship. However, these efforts at defining an ideal Barbadian citizen should not be understood exclusively in national terms. In fact, the article de…

  • Prolegomenon

    Susan Harewood•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2008•References: 4

This paper is an initial examination the significance of spatial relations to the constitution of transnational citizenships. Specifically, the paper explores practices of place and space in a Barbadian bus terminal. This terminal is a rich site at which citizens, migrants, state managers and economic elites contest the meanings of both Barbadian citizenship and the Caribbean regional integration movement. It is an integration movement prompted, …

  • Masquerade Performance and the Play of Sexual Identity in Calypso

    Open Access•Susan Harewood•ARTICLE•Culture Studies ↔ Critical…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This article examines the constitutive nature of Caribbean popular culture, specifically calypso performance, in postnational and postindependence identity formation. It seeks to contribute to research that highlights the importance of the work of the imagination in the active processes of community formations and intervene into standard calypso research and criticism that posits calypso as the voice of the people but identifies the people as a r…
