The relations between the Chilean Church and the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) are often characterized as conflictive. After a short period of accommodation and legitimation, the Chilean episcopate started to confront the dictatorship in the name of the poor and persecuted, but never breaking entirely with the regime. This led to a complicated relationship between the Church and the dictatorship, which tried to legitimize authorita…
The Pinochet Generation
The Chilean military coup d'état against Salvador Allende in 1973 has received much attention from the academic community. Numerous scholars have tried to explain the violent coup, focusing generally on the political crisis, the political parties, the violence in the streets, the support by the United States, or the internal errors of the Allende administration.

Hybride Erinnerung
This article analyses the »struggle for memory« in Chile after the Pinochet dictatorship. Drawing on theories seeking to combine the concept of »collective memory« with methods of oral history, the main focus will be on the »emblematic memories«. After the end of the dictatorship, the two most influential narratives of the past came from the democratic government of the Concertación and from the military, in alliance with the oppositional parties…
