  • Business 2.0

    Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Among the many ‘businesspeople’ whom the promise of commercial success has drawn to southern China in recent years one can find a small number of Kyrgyz middlemen. Working mostly with Russian-speaking clients, their job is to organize buying trips, coordinate with local manufacturers, translate, and oversee cargo shipments. Based on ethnographic fieldwork since 2013, this article examines in detail the careers, work routines and business model ad…

  • From Shanghai to Iug-2 … and What Now? Traces of (Re-)Claiming Bishkek from Multitemporal Fieldwork in Kyrgyzstan

    Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2017

This article examines practices of (re-)claiming in Bishkek through the prism of “multitemporal fieldwork.” Focusing on the young male residents of a Soviet-era neighborhood, I trace their ways of performing belonging in a rapidly changing urban environment. Most significantly, these men’s coming of age has been accompanied by a gradual detachment from their exclusive focus on a neighborhood community that locally used to be known as Shanghai. Al…

  • Re/Claiming Bishkek

    Emil Nasritdinov, Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2017•References: 3

In Kyrgyzstan, and especially in Bishkek, practices of social activism have been evolving and taken more meaningful and organized forms. Today, there are all kinds of activist groups and movements that are not simply struggling for resources, but feature solid ideological foundations and concrete visions. This introduction provides a brief overview of contemporary social activism in Bishkek

Angst in the City is the title that the authors of these lines chose for a jointresearch project and seminar looking into expressions of emotion and socialexclusion in diverse urban environments. The title serves as a shorthand forapprehensive feelings that individuals or groups perceive when physically orimaginarily finding themselves in certain spaces in the fabric of the city thatthey inhabit. The concept of fear will be discussed in more deta…

  • From Frunze to Bishkek

Emil Nasritdinov, Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2016•Cited by: 4

This article presents an “alternative urban history” of Bishkek (Frunze). We describe the history of Soviet streets and of the everyday life of young people, whose narratives fit neither the Soviet nor the post-Soviet history textbooks. Yet, these stories are extremely important, rich, and unique. They reveal the complex dynamics of the social organization of urban territories in cities of Soviet origin. The research has shown that the territoria…

  • Avoidance and appropriation in Bishkek

    Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 21

Much has changed since Frunze was renamed Bishkek in 1991 and became the capital of independent Kyrgyzstan. Though it was once considered to be among the ‘greenest’ and most ‘orderly’ cities of the Soviet Union, today many of its long-term residents complain about the new settlements (novostroiki) that have emerged during the last two decades. To Bishkek's urbanites, the recent arrival of migrants is not associated with an escape from rural pover…

  • The Institutionalization of Mobility

    Open Access•Philipp Schröder, Manja Stephan-Emmrich•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2016•Cited by: 20•References: 56

In the wider scientific debate, post-Soviet Central Asia has been primarily known for the question in what ways this region currently experiences a 'New Great Game' of geostrategy and resource-competition. In contrast to that, ethnographic research on the various cross-border mobilities, networks and identifications of non-elite actors from countries such as Kyrgyzstan or Tajikistan has set off only recently. Proposing a conceptual approach based…

  • Urbanizing’ Bishkek

    Philipp Schröder•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2010•Cited by: 13•References: 20

Within the context of Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek, this article deals with an identity boundary between the so-called ‘urban’ Kyrgyz and Russians on the one side, and the so-called ‘rural’ or ‘newly arriving’ Kyrgyz, on the other. In the first section I discuss the ways in which this boundary is constructed among Bishkek male youth, both rhetorically as well as with regard to actual practices of social inclusion and exclusion. Starting from thes…
