Donor Portraits in Byzantine Art
In Byzantium, people often had themselves shown in, or on, the holy object they had paid for, together with the holy figure to whom it was dedicated. These images have been labelled as ‘donor portraits’. In this book, Rico Franses takes this concept of ‘donor portrait’ and subjects it to an intense critical re-evaluation. His question is deceptively simple: what were these portraits about and for? His argument is that while we may think it is cle…

Barriers to well-being for Aboriginal gender-diverse people
Purpose – Despite health inequities experienced by Aboriginal and transgender (trans) communities, little research has explored the well-being of Aboriginal trans (gender-diverse) people. This paper aims to describe barriers to well-being in a sample of Aboriginal gender-diverse people in Ontario, Canada. Design/methodology/approach – In 2009-2010, 433 trans people in Canada's most populous province participated in a multi-mode health survey. In …
Exploring order and disorder
This article explores how working mothers negotiate the often competing spheres of paid work and unpaid domestic and care work. Drawing upon qualitative data from a varied sample of women, it discusses the impact of workplace demands on home life, women’s attempts to contain the domestic sphere so as not to disrupt paid work, and the emotional conflicts inherent to combining dual roles. In addition, the article applies Bauman’s concepts of order …
Gold Glass Tesserae Said to Be From the Roman Villa Site at Southwick, West Sussex
This paper seeks to characterise through elemental analysis some unusual gold glass tesserae said to have been found at a Roman villa site in Southwick, West Sussex. The site is no longer accessible, being underneath a Methodist chapel, but it has been excavated, to some extent, on several occasions. Glass tesserae are not common in a British setting but they are by no means unusual in Roman mosaics. Gold glass tesserae, however, in which gold le…

Byzantine glass mosaic tesserae
Issues about the manufacture of Byzantine mosaics and the implications of these in wider terms relating to social and economic questions about the art form have been little discussed. This paper brings together evidence about Byzantine glass mosaic tesserae gathered from archaeology, glass technology and glass analysis, and synthesizes these into a discussion of three aspects: distribution; manufacture; trade and price. It looks to examine how th…

Senses and sensibility in Byzantium
Byzantine art tends to be considered in almost exclusively visual terms. However, Byzantine writings about works of art appeal to all the senses and aim to involve the listener (who may also be looking at the object described) in an emotional engagement with the image and with the scene it depicts. This paper explores some of the ways in which the five physical senses were engaged in the overall sensory experience of worship in a Byzantine church…

Colour and the Byzantine rainbow
Colour is the ‘dark continent’ of Byzantine art history, the most neglected element of art. In 1931, Ernst Diez wrote: ‘a coming generation of art-historians may be puzzled to understand the paradoxical prejudice still latent in our time, which treats colour as not the most significant quality of a coloured work of art, but as an accident that can be overlooked in scientific research work’. A similar comment would still be valid today. Colour is …
