The Trans-Evol project
Elucidating the use of rhinoceros teeth by Neanderthals
The use of faunal remains as tools by Neanderthals has long intrigued researchers. These remains include mammal teeth, which are particularly durable and resistant. Nevertheless, there is a significant gap in taphonomic analysis of dental remains, and archaeological experiments with tooth tools remain scarce. Recent studies suggest that Paleolithic groups may have used rhinoceros teeth as tools. This work seeks to elucidate this question by apply…
Ungulate feeding ecology at Abri du Maras reveals diverse habitats and seasonally targeted Neanderthal occupations (MIS 5–3)
Abri du Maras (Ardèche, France), located on the southeastern margins of the Massif Central, yields a long sequence of occupation from MIS 7 to MIS 3, first under a cave and then under a shelter resulting from the cave collapse. Middle Palaeolithic assemblages record different technological traditions of human groups regularly and recurrently occupying the site. Dental mesowear and low-magnification microwear are combined to reconstruct ungulate d…
Early Middle Palaeolithic Occupations Dated to MIS 7 at the Abri du Maras (Ardèche, Southeast France)
New excavations at the Abri du Maras have yielded remains of hitherto unknown deposits (layer 6) from the base of the sequence, with a small lithic and faunal series dated to MIS 7. In this paper, we investigate this occupation, undoubtedly in a cave context, before the cave gradually gave way to a shelter where the last occupations took place. The faunal assemblage accumulated through anthropic activities, and cervids are the dominant species. T…
Neanderthal mobility over very long distances
This study explores the mobility and raw material circulation of Neanderthals at the El Castillo cave, located in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, with a particular focus on flint. The levels analyzed (XXab-XXf1.1) date between 45 and 70 ka BP, corresponding to the Mousterian period and, in some cases, to the Vasconian facies. Most of the flint varieties are of local origin ( 250 km). These findings provide insights into patterns of li…
Exploring the Middle Stone Age lithic technology at DGS, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania
Olduvai Gorge, nestled between the East African Rift Valley and the Mozambique Belt, is key to understanding human evolution. Even though extensive archaeological and palaeoanthropological findings have been unearthed here since the 1930s, the Middle Stone Age in this area has nonetheless received less attention than the Oldowan or the Acheulean. This paper presents the lithic technology analysis of Dorothy Garrod Site (DGS), a newly-documented M…
Kanyimangin
The Early to Middle Pleistocene Transition (EMPT) is characterised by major environmental changes and evolutionary innovations within the genus Homo but the scarcity of the African EMPT fossil and archaeological records obscures its palaeoecological context. Here, we present archaeological and faunal evidence from a newly excavated West-Turkana EMPT site-Kanyimangin
The evolution of stone tool technology at Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)
The Dorothy Garrod Site
Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) is a key site for the study of human evolution as well as the origin of modern humans and the Middle Stone Age (MSA). In this study, we present a new MSA location named Dorothy Garrod Site (DGS), found in the main branch of Olduvai Gorge. The site has only one archaeological level, located stratigraphically in the Upper Ndutu. Although it has not yet been possible to radiometrically date it, it has yielded numerous archae…
Incidental burning on bones by Neanderthals
Palaeolithic archaeology in the conglomerate caves of north-eastern Iberia
Large, conglomerate caves in north-eastern Iberia have been significant places since the Neolithic through to historical times; however, their significance during the Palaeolithic has barely been explored. This project is the first systematic study of the use of these iconic geological landmarks among Pleistocene hunter-gatherers
New macaque fossil remains from Morocco
Neanderthal plant use and stone tool function investigated through non-pollen palynomorphs analyses and pollen washes in the Abri du Maras, South-East France
Perikymata numbers and enamel extension rates in the incisors of three archaeological modern human populations from two caves located in Spain
Annihilation and Deification in Beguine Theology and Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls
In 1309 ecclesiastical leaders condemned as heresy Marguerite Porete's rejection of moral duty, her doctrine that “the annihilated soul is freed from the virtues.” 1 They also condemned her book, the Mirror of Simple Souls , which includes doctrines associated decades earlier with a “new spirit” heresy spreading “blasphemies” such as that “a person can become God” because “a soul united to God is made divine.” 2 In his study, The Heresy of the Fr…
