Neo-Ottoman Imaginaries in Contemporary Turkey
Neo-Ottoman Imaginaries in Contemporary Turkey
Transforming, Transgressing and Terrorizing
The article discusses some werewolf motifs in Swedish ballads, which tell of shapeshifters of ambiguous character that change between a human and a non-human body, dwell in spaces on the fringe of the human world, and have potential to intrude into the world of humans. Some of them represent a harsh untamed wilderness, others dangers, threats, or misbehaviour inside the human community. All religious imaginaries have fantastic things to tell: myt…
Nostalgia, Loss and Creativity in South-East Europe
In från sidan. Elizabeth W. Fernea
English abstract: An apparent trend in the study of Islam and Muslims during the last decades is the growing interest in religious everyday life and ritual practice. Sometimes Islamic Studies are said to be too focused on politicization, extremism and migration, but contemporary studies to a growing extent also discuss ”lived religion” and ”vernacular religion” with the ambition to identify how individuals and smaller groups practice and understa…
Response to Serafim Seppälä
A response to Serafim Seppälä’s article ‘The “Temple of Non-Being” at Tsitsernakaberd and remembrance of the Armenian genocide: an interpretation’. Key themes discussed include increasing efforts to convey divergent positions in a conflict when contemporary memorial sites are planned, as well as recent contributions within the academic field of memory studies, placing emphasis on local narrative and agency rather than institutional religious and …
More Than Mythology
Claiming Heritage, Renewing Authority
This article discusses the role and status of Sufi groups in Bosnia-Herzegovina today, an issue where Turkish influences are unavoidable, irrespective of whether the focus is on conceptions of the Balkans’ Ottoman legacy or on contemporary arenas for religious alternatives in public life. Today old Sufi establishments face competition from groups with roots abroad both in terms of community leadership and the relationship between the individual g…
Witchcraft and Deep Time-a debate at Harvard
Archaeology, consistently warned off religion by wise old heads, here rushes deeper into the thicket to tackle the thorny topic of ancient witchcraft. The occasion was a seminar at Harvard organised by Stephen Mitchell and Neil Price to mark the twentieth anniversary of Carlo Ginzburg's influential book on the connections between witches and shamanism - and by implication the possible connections with prehistoric ritual and belief. Archaeology wa…
The Part of the Whole. Cosmology as an Empirical and Analytical Concept
In the study of Old Norse religion, mythology and cosmology are two core concepts frequently used in inter-disciplinary discussions as to the content, changes and spread of the pre-Christian religion in Scandinavia. The article discusses the concept of cosmology in relation to religion and world-view, with examples from picture-stones and from mythological and heroic texts. Cosmology is not a criterion of religion, any more than the occurrence of…

Old Norse Religion in Long-Term Perspectives
Development and Reformulation of a Returnee Identity as Alevi
The presented study is actually the product of a research that was conducted in 1988, investigating a returnee community inside a Turkish small town. The main focus of this study was, among others, the analysis of the formation of a “migrant identity”. Even though several years passed, contact with this returnee community continued. Finally, in May 1996 the field was revisited in a more formal manner.
Alevi Identity

The author focuses on an informal Sufi group of women in Istanbul, with only peripheral connections to the traditional established orders. The women in the group studied instead have organized their activities in the form of a religious endowment offering regular prayer meetings and basic religious education and charity work to other women in their neighbourhood. The group is an example of the many independent religious non-governmental organizat…

Rooms of their own
This paper deals with how rituals, deeply rooted in local tradition, can be used to legitimize new forms of activism in complex modern societies. The empirical material comes from fieldwork in Istanbul, where the author has studied a small Muslim women's group. The women have organized their activities in the form of a religious foundation, offering regular prayer meetings and basic religious education to other women in the vicinity. The women's …
