The Archaic in the North-Central Chilean Andes
The western slope landscapes of the Chilean Andean mountains, from the extreme and arid lands in the north to the beginning of the fertile valleys in the south of Chile, were inhabited by hunter-gatherers and fisher societies with a diverse range of economic and social practices since almost 13,000 years ago. The evolution and historical processes of these societies were deeply associated with the ecological conditions of each area and period, as…
Microstratigraphy and Site Formation Processes at Quebrada Jaguay 280 (Peru)
This study presents a microanalytical, geoarchaeological study of Quebrada Jaguay (QJ)‐280, a Terminal Pleistocene–Holocene coastal site in southern Peru. Combining micromorphology, μXRF and μFTIR, we develop a site formation model that also reassesses site use and forager behaviour. Micro‐contextual data provide new insights into sedimentation, taphonomy and human activity, revealing short‐term, seasonal occupations with evidence of spatial shif…
Long-term occupation of bofedales ecosystems by high-Andean hunter-gatherers in the Dry Puna, northern Chile
This project employs a geoarchaeological approach to explore human occupation of the highland wetlands (bofedales) and salt flats of the Dry Puna of northern Chile (>2500m above sea level) during the Holocene. Differences in the archaeological record of each ecosystem are tentatively suggested to relate to settlement patterns and the history of the landscape
Geomorphology of the Caracota Valley, Western Altiplano, Northern Chile
We present a detailed geomorphological characterisation of the Caracota Valley (18°49′S 69°11′W, 4200–4600 m) in the western Altiplano of Northern Chile. A complex pattern of Pleistocene and Early Holocene glacier activity is responsible for the today's landscape configuration. Wetlands and temporary lakes significantly characterise the Caracota Valley setting providing water sources and storage required for life in this semi-arid landscape. Non-…
Struggles for the decommodification of housing
After the Global Financial Crisis, activists and scholars have turned to collective forms of housing as a strategy to decommodify housing. We argue that housing cooperatives might take a crucial role in this strategy. The fact that they are still marginal, however, raises questions about the conditions for their emergence, growth and survival. By bringing the trajectories of housing cooperatives in Switzerland and Uruguay in dialogue, we capture …
The Dry Puna in extreme northern Chile lies between the Andean region's two main camelid domestication centers, a location that makes it particularly important to the study of human-animal relationships. This article presents a first synthesis of the archeozoological analysis of fourteen hunter-gatherer sites in the Andean foothills near Arica (Chile), the preliminary results of stable isotope analyses from two locations, and 35 associated radioc…

The Dry Puna as an ecological megapatch and the peopling of South America
High-altitude adaptation and late Pleistocene foraging in the Bolivian Andes

Late Pleistocene human occupation of the hyperarid core in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile
Few archeological sites in South America contain uncontroversial evidence for when the first peopling of the continent occurred. Largely ignored in this debate, extreme environments are assumed either as barriers to this early wave of migration or without potential for past habitability. Here, we report on a rare 12–13 ka human occupation from Quebrada Maní (site QM12), a plantless, near rainless landscape (1240 m asl and 85 km from the Pacific O…
Hakenasa Cave and its relevance for the peopling of the southern Andean Altiplano
Researchers in the High Andes in northern Chile report the study of a fine cave sequence, supported by 19 radiocarbon dates. The initial occupation atc. 11 500 cal BP represents the earliest human occupation known at this altitude. The toolkit suggests a hunting (logistical) camp used to take advantage of the animals gathering in the rich wetland of the neighbourhood
