  • Evaluation of Corona and Ikonos high resolution satellite imagery for archaeological prospection in western Syria

Open Access•Anthony Beck, Graham Philip et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 9

Satellite surveys in Syria have made use of imagery recorded some 30 years apart. By comparing the earlier pictures (Corona) with the later (Ikonos), sites captured on the former can be accurately located by the latter. The comparison also reveals the stark implications for archaeology as large parts of west Asian landscape change from a state of 'benign neglect' to active redevelopment. Based on their experience in the Homs survey, the authors h…

NotesThis quotation slightly distorts the context. Pope is speaking of the scansion of a line from Beowulf and ends the sentence “... in this instance” in The Rhythm of Beowulf, rev. ed. (New Haven: Yale UP, 1966), p. 15. For a more typical, less sympathetic summary, see Bliss's review of Jerzy Kuryłowicz, Die sprachlichen Grundlagen der allgermanischen Metrik, Anglia 90 (1972): 510-12.Hoyt Duggan, “The Evidential Basis for Old English Metrics,” …

An area in the Fenlands of Eastern England was used to assess the spectral, spatial, and seasonal requirements of airborne multispectral data for identifying wetland archaeological features by detecting crop and soil marks. Ordination of data from a scanner with 11 spectral channels was achieved using the Sheffield method, which calculates the wavebands that produce a 3 band composite image with optimum contrast using band variances and interband…

    Open Access•Daniel Donoghue•ARTICLE•Anglo-Saxon England•1986•References: 10

The Metres of Boethius offer a unique opportunity to study the complex subject of Old English verse syntax. They enjoy this distinction because of the unusual way in which they were composed. The versifier did not work directly from the original Latin metra of Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy but from an Old English prose intermediary, freely translated from the Latin originals. King Alfred was the author of the prose translation and was prob…
