Death by Combat at the Dawn of the Bronze Age? Profiling the Dagger-Accompanied Burial From Racton, West Sussex
A previously unresearched Early Bronze Age dagger-grave found in 1989 at Racton, West Sussex, is profiled here through a range of studies. The dagger, the only grave accompaniment, is of the ‘transitional’ Ferry Fryston type, this example being of bronze rather than copper. Bayesian analysis of relevant radiocarbon dates is used to refine the chronology of the earliest bronze in Britain. While the Ferry Fryston type was current in the earlier hal…
A Hafted Halberd Excavated at Trecastell, Powys
Excavations at Trecastell, Powys, south Wales, in 2007 yielded a copper halberd complete with its haft-grip. This has major implications for the mode of hafting halberds, but the discovery has also prompted a reconsideration of insular halberds in their north-west European context. Understanding the relationships between different types of halberd and different regional groups continues to be hampered by the dearth of good dating evidence, but th…

Three cists and a possible Roman road at Barbush Quarry, Dunblane, Perthshire
A concentration of archaeological features identified and excavated at the quarry included three short cists, one containing a cannel coal and jet disc-bead necklace and another a poorly-preserved skeleton and a Food Vessel. Finds appeared to be from the Early Bronze Age but a radiocarbon date from the skeletal material gave a later date of c. 2845 BP. Other finds included two parallel ditches associated with an area of packed gravel and cobbles …
Investigating jet and jet-like artefacts from prehistoric Scotland
IntroductionThe black spacer plate necklaces and bracelets of the Early Bronze Age (Figure 1) are among the most technically accomplished prestige items of this period in Britain and Ireland. There has been much debate over the years as to whether these artefacts and other prehistoric black jewellery and dress accessories are the product of specialist jetworkers based around Whitby in North Yorkshire - Britain's only significant source of jet. As…

Adolescent Health Promotion in a Low-Income, Urban Environment
Research with focus groups of adolescents was conducted prior to implementing an adolescent health promotion program. Data were drawn from videotaped focus groups of adolescents attending two rival middle schools. Matrices were employed for data analysis in a two-phase process. Results indicated adolescent health promotion needs in the areas of violence and gangs, interpersonal conflict, and social pressure to excel. The school, rather than the h…

Early Bronze Age lead - a unique necklace from southeast Scotland
Excavation of an Early Bronze Age cist cemetery at West Water Reservoir, Peeblesshire, has uncovered a unique two-strand necklace, with one string of cannel coal disc beads and another of lead beads, buried around the neck of a young child. This is the earliest evidence for the use of metallic lead in Britain and Ireland
