  • Open Arable Fields at Portland and elsewhere

    Open Access•Charles D Drew•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1948

  • The Excavation of Long Barrow 163a on Thickthorn Down, Dorset

    Open Access•Charles D Drew, Stuart Piggott•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1936•Cited by: 13

The culture of the Neolithic Age in Britain established itself particularly firmly in the chalk districts which have their centre in, and radiate from, Salisbury Plain, as is shown by the distribution of some of the most characteristic monuments of the culture, the Long Barrows. Here the open or thinly wooded downland offered every advantage for the pasture of flocks and herds and for early experiments in agriculture, while flint, essential for t…

  • A Late Bronze Age Hoard from Lulworth, Dorset

    Open Access•Charles D Drew•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1935•Cited by: 2

From the southern end of the main mass of the Dorset chalk hills an extension runs eastward. This, tapering as it proceeds, forms the narrow ridge of the Purbeck Hills, and, after a break caused by the waters of Poole Bay, is continued by the downs of the Isle of Wight. To the north it is bounded by the valley of the River Frome and Poole Harbour. To the south the sea is nowhere more than a few miles away, and in places it has eaten deeply into t…
