  • Radiocarbon Dating on Echo Micadas, Lsce, Gif-Sur-Yvette, France

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Maurice Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 35

The Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE) has operated a radiocarbon dating laboratory for almost 70 years. It has evolved from a traditional ß-decay counting to an accelerator mass spectrometry facility. In 2015, the LSCE received a major upgrade with the installation of a MICADAS. This evolution required adjustments in sample preparation to match the new capability to date samples as small as a few tens of μgC. We summ…

  • Variability of Radiocarbon Reservoir Age Effects in Lakes and Rivers in Anatolia and Lesser Caucasus

Open Access•Michel Fontugne, Christine Hatté et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Referencias: 30

Multiproxy sedimentary sequence analysis constitutes the basis for reconstructions of past paleoenvironments and climate evolution. These sequences are, for the most part, obtained by coring in lakes, maars or crater lakes whose waters can record volcanic activity or karstic contributions, especially in Eastern Anatolia and the Lesser Caucasus. The reservoir age effect in these geological contexts leads to an apparent aging of the radiocarbon age…

  • Experiments at Modane Underground Laboratory or the Swan Song of Radiocarbon Ss-Counting by Gas Proportional Counter

Open Access•Michel Fontugne, Christine Hatté et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

In 1991, a 14 C ß-counting installation with four proportional CO 2 gas counters was tested at the Modane underground laboratory, 1700 m below the summit of Pointe du Fréjus, reducing the muon flux to 4 muons per square meter and per day. With cosmic radiation attenuated by a factor of 2.10 6 , the background level of the counters was reduced by 65 to 85% while its variability was reduced by a factor of 30–80 depending on the type of counter. The…

Radiocarbon activity of dissolved inorganic carbon has been measured in the northwestern Black Sea. Both continental shelf and open-sea profiles show that surface waters are in equilibrium with the atmosphere. The observed distribution of 14 C activity shows a weak contribution of the deep 14 C-depleted CO 2 to the photic zone. Such a distribution of 14 C within the water column is unable to explain the aging of sedimentary organic matter and res…

Primeros resultados 1995-1997

Open Access•Daniele Lavallee, Michèle Julien et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l’Institut français…•1999

At the outset of the Archaic Period, human groups subsisting on marine resources and occasional terestrial hunting, began to settle down on the South Peruvian coast. In Quebrada de los Burros, 14C dates place these regular occupations between 9800 to 3200 BP, during a phase of a calm and relatively wet climate (see Usselmann et al., this volume). The consequent formation in the valley of fresh water or stagnant ponds created highly favourable cir…

  • El Niño Variability in the Coastal Desert of Southern Peru during the Mid-Holocene

Open Access•Michel Fontugne, Pierre Usselmann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Fourteen organic-rich sedimentary layers in the deposits at Quebrada de los Burros, in coastal southern Peru (Tacna department), lie between two debris-flow units, interpreted to result from El Niño events, at 8980 cal yr B.P. and after 3380 cal yr B.P., respectively. The accumulation of the fine-grained and low-energy sediments of this deposit during the mid-Holocene is incompatible with the occurrence of El Niño events in this region, as these …

Radiocarbon measurements of organic sedimentary deposits from the Quebrada de los Burros (Department of Tacna, Peru) permit the reconstruction of climate dynamics during the mid-Holocene (3200-8500 years BP).Two short debris flow events marks the beginning and the end of period of fine grain sedimentation processes. This period is contemporaneous with the presence of human settlements in the Quebrada

  • Δ 13 C of Loess Organic Matter as a Potential Proxy for Paleoprecipitation

    Open Access•Christine Hatté, P Antoine et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Paleoprecipitation reconstructions on the basis of pollen are well known, but they do not provide high temporal resolution for glacial periods. High-resolution paleoprecipitation reconstructions for the last glaciation based on the isotopic record organic matter in loess from Nussloch (Rhine Valley, Germany) are consistent with paleoprecipitation inferred from peat in the same area using an independant method. Thus, δ 13 C of loess organic matter…

This study presents results from a multi-proxy analysis of cores taken in a crater-lake sequence from Eski Acigöl in centr-al Turkey which cover the period from pre-c. 16000 cal. yr BP to the present. The sediments comprise an upper unit of enerally non-laminated, banded to massive silts and peats of mid- to late-Holocene age, overlying a laminated unit of late-Pleistocene to early/mid-Holocenie age. The laminae, comprising mainly aragonite. amor…

  • Cross dating (Th/U- 14 C) of calcite covering prehistoric paintings in Borneo

Open Access•Valérie Plagnes, Christiane Causse et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

We present the first application of cross-dating (Th/U measured by thermo-ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and 14 C measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)) of calcite covering prehistoric paintings. Th/U age estimates of cave drapery range from 9800 to 27,300 yr B.P. while conventional 14 C age is estimated between 9900 and 7610 yr B.P. depending on the dead carbon correction. The age discrepancy is attributed to a disturbance of Th/U…

In Quebrada de los Burros in coastal southern Peru (Tacna department), human settlements containing shells and charcoal deposits have been excavated since 1995. The sea surface 14 C reservoir ages, estimated by calculating the difference of 14 C age between marine shells and terrestrial organic materials, exhibit high values during the lower and middle Holocene and decrease abruptly after 4000 cal BP. The increase of reservoir age at around 7000–…
