The Xihetan Site is a Neolithic site located in Jiuquan, Gansu Province, where a large number of white bead ornaments have been unearthed. Through various scientific analysis techniques, including ultra-depth microscopic observation, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), these bead ornaments were identified as having a…

This paper presents a study of 45 iron objects unearthed from the ancient Jingbao’er jade mining site in the western Hexi Corridor, dating from the Warring States period to the early West Han dynasty (about fourth–first centuries BCE). Metallographic and slag inclusion analyses were conducted to investigate the material features and their potential correlation with intended applications. Of the analysed items, 38 were made of cast iron, some of w…

  • Scientific research on white potteries from the Nanzuo site in Qingyang, Gansu province

    Open Access•Hanjun Wu, Han‐Jun Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Referências: 19

Located in Qingyang, Gansu province, China, the Nanzuo site on the Loess Plateau is a large‐scale, high‐ranking central settlement of the late Yangshao period with capital city characteristics. We used a thermal dilatometer, energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (EDXRF), optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectrometer to analyse the firing temperature, c…

  • Carious lesions as evidence for different adaptation strategies during the middle-late Holocene in the Gansu region, northwest China

    Open Access•L He, Guoke Chen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

The natural environment of the Gansu-Qinghai region in northwest China exhibits spatial variation, resulting in distinct adaptive strategies among populations in different geographical areas. In this study, we analyzed the diachronic trend and regional variations in caries prevalence among 10 different middle and late-Holocene groups by examining dental caries data to explore the correlation between different adaptation strategies and caries freq…

  • Identification and analysis of gemstone binding materials on imperial rank belts excavated from the tomb of Murongzhi

Open Access•Yun Liang, Guoke Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2024•Referências: 31

This paper analyzes and identifies the binders used in the jewel settings of the Baodian and Diexie belts excavated from the tomb of Murongzhi in Wuwei, Gansu, China. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the presence of protein in the binder samples. The result of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) shows that samples from both contained hydroxyproline, a characteristic amino acid for animal glue. Principal component …

Situated in the middle Hexi corridor, a vital passage of the ancient Silk Road, the Heishuiguo site was a military town on the northwestern frontier of the Han Dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE). To understand the lifestyle of the Heishuiguo population, levels of dental caries and tooth wear were assessed. Archaeological findings and historical records revealed a mixed subsistence strategy dependent upon agricultural production and domesticated animals at …

  • Water and soil management strategies and the introduction of wheat and barley to northern China

Open Access•Haiming Li, Yufeng Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 37

Studies of 'food globalisation' have traced the dispersal of cereals across prehistoric Eurasia. The degree to which these crops were accompanied by knowledge of soil and water preparation is less well known, however. The authors use stable isotope and archaeobotanical analyses to trace long-term trends in cultivation practices on the Loess Plateau (6000 BC-AD 1900). The results indicate that ancient farmers cultivated grains originating in South…

We report dozens of direct radiocarbon dates on charred grains from 22 archaeological sites of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in the Hexi Corridor, northwest China, a key region for trans-Eurasian exchange in prehistoric and historical times. These charred grains include remains of wheat and barley domesticated in southwest Asia and broomcorn and foxtail millet which originated from north China. Together with previously published radiocarbon dates…

    Open Access•Yishi Yang, G Dong et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 25

The Hexi Corridor of northwestern China was a principal axis of cultural interchange between eastern and western Eurasia during the prehistoric and historic epochs. Neolithic groups began dense settlements in Hexi Corridor after 4300 BP with millet crops and polychrome pottery from north China and bronze from Central Asia around 4000 BP accompanied by wheat, barley, and sheep. The impact of these activities on the environment during the late Neol…
