  • Dating the beginning of urbanization in Central Mexico: A high-resolution chronology of the Middle Formative Period at Tlalancaleca

Open Access•Tatsuya Murakami, Alexander Jurado et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 3

Research by the Tlalancaleca Archaeological Project (PATP) has corroborated modifications to the Middle Formative chronology in Puebla-Tlaxcala (Lesure et al. 2006, 2014) using Bayesian modeling on 26 radiocarbon dates from Tlalancaleca. The present study is the first to evaluate the region’s Middle Formative chronology with radiocarbon dates from superposed stratigraphy. Nine Bayesian models were constructed with different combinations of radioc…

  • Interpersonal predictors of loneliness in Japanese children: Variable- and person-centered approaches

Open Access•Takuma Nishimura, Tatsuya Murakami et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2022

To protect young children from loneliness, it will be more beneficial to prevent the development of loneliness rather than to apply interventions to reduce loneliness once established. Preventive practices need to be implemented to protect children from loneliness

  • Reconfiguring Market Economy: Dimensions of Exchange and Social Relations at Teotihuacan

    Open Access•Tatsuya Murakami•ARTICLE•Archeological Papers of the…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 46

Polanyi's categorical models of exchange systems (reciprocity, redistribution, and market exchange) have provided a powerful tool for characterizing ancient (and modern) economies. While such models are useful in some respects, they obscure variations within each economic system and similarities between different systems. This chapter explores different dimensions of exchange, including market exchange, as a methodological framework for assessing…

  • Petrographic and XRF analyses of andesitic cut stone blocks at Teotihuacan, Mexico: Implications for the Organization of Urban Construction

  • Labor Mobilization and Cooperation for Urban Construction: Building Apartment Compounds at Teotihuacan

    Open Access•Tatsuya Murakami•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 43

Teotihuacan underwent an urban renewal during the Tlamimilolpa phase (AD 250-350) in which more than 2,000 apartment compounds were constructed to accommodate its estimated 100,000 residents. Although the orderly layout and canonical orientation of the city imply top-down planning, growing evidence suggests a bottom-up process of urban transformation. This study combines architectural energetics with archaeometric analysis of nonlocal constructio…

  • Do not overlook lonely children: Additional evidence from two longitudinal studies

Open Access•Takuma Nishimura, Tatsuya Murakami et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2018•References: 53

The present article investigated the longitudinal influence of loneliness on peer acceptance in school through two longitudinal studies; specifically, we hypothesized a bidirectional view on the relationship between loneliness and peer acceptance. In Study 1, a total of 383 Japanese elementary school students in fourth and fifth grades (207 boys and 176 girls, aged 9–11) at three public schools in Japan participated in an 18-month longitudinal st…

  • A Multi-Method Approach to Reconstructing Occupational History and Activity Areas: A Case Study at the Formative Site of Tlalancaleca, Central Mexico

Tatsuya Murakami, Shigeru Kabata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 56

While surface collection constitutes an important component of field research at the site and regional levels, the association between surface and sub-surface materials needs to be examined through independent lines of evidence. This study employed manual bucket auger probing and soil geochemistry at the Formative site of Tlalancaleca, Central Mexico (800 b.c.–a.d. 250), to evaluate the results of surface collection and to understand the formatio…

  • Replicative construction experiments at Teotihuacan, Mexico: Assessing the duration and timing of monumental construction

    Tatsuya Murakami•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2015•Cited by: 7

Architectural conspicuous consumption provides an important basis for elucidating changing power relations, and architectural energetics or labor analysis has been widely employed in the study of early complex societies. However, neither the duration of construction nor the number of laborers is specified in standard labor-time measurements and this needs to be addressed in order to provide meaningful and comparable measurements. This paper prese…
