Jigna Desai, Daniel A Bronstein et al.•BOOK•Asian Americans in Dixie•2017

This chapter examines the impact of various state apparatuses, including exclusion laws, on the little remarked but fascinating Chinese American merchant communities in Atlanta, Augusta, and Savannah, Georgia. Federal Chinese Exclusion laws established a highly selective exemption system designed to prevent most Chinese from entering and reentering the United States. The law explicitly barred the first-time entry of laborers but allowed Chinese t…

    Pamela Butler, Jigna Desai•ARTICLE•Meridians•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 14

Critical readings of "chick lit" are typically limited to a framework that understands the popular fiction genre as a sign or symptom of "postfeminism" in the U.S. In its readings of chick lit in general, and of South Asian American chick lit as a particular women of color subgenre, this essay steps away from the framework of postfeminism that so dominates academic and popular discussions of chick lit, and instead uses critical race and transnati…

Made by and for an English-speaking bourgeoisie, this new cinema, characterised by such films as Bombay Boys and Hyderabad Blues, frequently seeks to dissect critically the increasing presence of diaspora within the postcolonial nation-state in the moment of increasing globalisation processes. The essay discusses how South Asian diasporic cu…
