  • This is a sovereign assembly

    Open Access•Andrew Mccarthy, Martin O’donoghue•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2024•References: 23

The stability of Irish democracy since 1922 is often a cause for contentment with lines of succession drawn from 'Grattan's parliament', O'Connell's popular movement, and the achievements of the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) at Westminster through to Dáil Éireann. The IPP certainly disrupted the Commons, yet Irish politics was also shaped by the 'mother of parliaments' – MPs mastered parliamentary procedure and home rule legislation drew on Bri…

  • The Role of International Organizations in Protecting Cypriot Heritage

    Andrew Mccarthy•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2015•Cited by: 1

As the only foreign research institute of its kind in Cyprus, the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI) serves the needs of a great many of the international scholars involved in the study of historical, archaeological, cultural, and related subjects on the island. Founded in 1978, the institute has long served—notably through our library—local Cypriot scholars as well. Importantly, although higher education in Cyprus today is…

  • Local institutions and local economic development

Andy Pike, David Marlow et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2015•Cited by: 15•References: 13

This paper examines the roles of local institutions in economic development at the local level. Drawing upon comparative analysis of the 39 local enterprise partnerships emergent in England since 2010, it demonstrates: how local economic development institutions work within multi-agent and multi-scalar institutional settings; the ways institutional genealogy shapes processes of layering and recombining as well as dismantling and improvising in ep…

  • Archaeology in the Land of Carchemish

    T J Wilkinson, Edgar Peltenburg et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2007

The first season of survey around the site of Tell Jerablus Tahtani, conducted in March and April 2006, demonstrated the existence of occupations from the Neolithic to the Early Islamic period. Tell Jerablus Tahtani was fringed to the west by a lower settlement of Late Uruk and early third millennium BC date, at which time settlement was also evident at Tell Sha'ir to the west and at Duluk near the junction with the Sajour. Tells formed the main …

  • Gaza Research Project. Report on the 1999 and 2000 Seasons at al-Moghraqa

Louise Steel, Joanne Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2004

This report presents the results of survey and excavation at al-Moghraqa, in the vicinity of the Wadi Gaza. The objective of fieldwork was to establish the date of the site, the nature of its occupation and in particular the context and function of the terracotta cones previously recovered at the site in 1996. The stratigraphic sequence is published, demonstrating that the main period of occupation of al-Moghraqa spans the Middle Bronze II period…

  • Jerablus Tahtani, Syria, 1998–9

Edgar Peltenburg, Edward Eastaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2000

Two more fieldwork seasons of University of Edinburgh excavations at Jerablus Tahtani, near Carchemish, were undertaken since the last preliminary report of results in Levant 29, 1997, 1–18. The focus of investigations was on Periods 1 and 2B, belonging to the fourth and later third millennia BC. Period 1 deposits have unexpectedly yielded evidence for a local Late Chalcolithic foundation for the site. This seems to have been succeeded by a more …

  • Assessing the effectiveness of supplemental instruction

Andrew Mccarthy, Bridget Smuts et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Methods of assessing the effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction (SI) have neither satisfactorily nor conclusively demonstrated whether SI improves student performance in the university environment. Analysis which shows that students of all levels of preparedness attending SI perform better in the course than do their similarly prepared counterparts fails to account for other factors which may affect academic performance. This study points out …
