The legacy of post-Columbian disturbance in shaping a northwestern Amazonian forest
The ecological legacies of past human activity in modern Amazonian forests remain debated. Paleoecology helps provide long-term insights into land management practices and their ecological consequences. We analyzed fossil pollen, charcoal, phytoliths, and sediment chemistry from Añangucocha, a lake in Ecuadorian Amazonia, identifying six distinct phases of cultural use over the last 1120 years. All past cultural uses influenced vegetation composi…
Building belonging and evoking identity through bodily adornment: Pendants from the Ortiz site, south-western Puerto Rico
As a means for both the construction and communication of social identity in diverse human groups worldwide, objects of personal adornment can help to explain some prehistoric lifeways and beliefs. This study examines the materials and manufacture traces of whole and fragmentary pendants found in association with human burials at the Early Period (c. 4200 cal BC-cal AD 250) Ortiz site in south-western Puerto Rico. Using data from microscopy, elem…
A 2000-year history of disturbance and recovery at a sacred site in Peru’s northeastern cloud forest
The last 2000 years in the tropical Andes was both a time of major pre-Hispanic and Hispanic period cultural developments, and increased climate variability. From c. AD 1000, Andean societies underwent significant transformation and many sites previously integrated under imperial Wari hegemony were abandoned. It has been argued that this sociopolitical reorganization was, in part, a response to the heightened climate variability of the late-Holoc…
Influence of the intertropical convergence zone on the East Asian monsoon
Drought and the Maya Collapse
Between a.d. 760 and 930, millions of Maya disappeared from the Earth. We examine changes in the physical environment in which the Maya lived. The ice-core evidence from Greenland indicates that around the time of the Maya Collapse, a minimum in solar insolation and a low in solar activity occurred, accompanied by severe cold and dryness over Greenland, indicating hemispheric climatic conditions propitious for drought in the Maya Lowlands. In the…
Climate and the Collapse of Maya Civilization
In the anoxic Cariaco Basin of the southern Caribbean, the bulk titanium content of undisturbed sediment reflects variations in riverine input and the hydrological cycle over northern tropical South America. A seasonally resolved record of titanium shows that the collapse of Maya civilization in the Terminal Classic Period occurred during an extended regional dry period, punctuated by more intense multiyear droughts centered at approximately 810,…
Southward Migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone Through the Holocene
Titanium and iron concentration data from the anoxic Cariaco Basin, off the Venezuelan coast, can be used to infer variations in the hydrological cycle over northern South America during the past 14,000 years with subdecadal resolution. Following a dry Younger Dryas, a period of increased precipitation and riverine discharge occurred during the Holocene “thermal maximum.” Since ∼5400 years ago, a trend toward drier conditions is evident from the …
Deglacial changes in ocean circulation from an extended radiocarbon calibration
A New 14 C Calibration Data Set for the Last Deglaciation Based on Marine Varves
Varved sediments of the tropical Cariaco Basin provide a new 14 C calibration data set for the period of deglaciation (10,000 to 14,500 years before present: 10–14.5 cal ka bp). Independent evaluations of the Cariaco Basin calendar and 14 C chronologies were based on the agreement of varve ages with the GISP2 ice core layer chronology for similar high-resolution paleoclimate records, in addition to 14 C age agreement with terrestrial 14 C dates, …
Producing Visual Traditions Among Workers: The Uses of Photography at Pullman
From 1880 to 1980 the Pullman Company repeatedly turned to photography to shape the attitudes and behavior of its workers. It built the Pullman Car Works and adjoining town on the fringes of Chicago as a model industrial community with the goal of resolving the endemic conflict between capital and labor. However, despite its claim that the model town was intended as purely “practical” philanthropy—that is, that sanitary and beautiful conditions w…

A Social Analysis of KPD Supporters: The Hamburg Insurrectionaries of October 1923
Although much has been written about the history of the German Communist Party, little is known about who actually belonged to it or supported it. Yet knowledge of the social composition of German Communism is an important, in many ways crucial, factor in assessing the role of the KPD in the development of the German workers' movement during the Weimar Republic. Aside from a census of party members conducted by the national leadership in 1927, an…
Labor and the End of Weimar: The Case of the KPD in the November 1928 Lockout in the Rhenish-Westphalian Iron and Steel Industry
The decision of German employers in the Rhenish-Westphalian iron and steel industry to lock out workers in November 1928 rather than accept binding arbitration of a dispute over wages marked, in retrospect, the beginning of the dissolution of the Weimar Republic. The strongest group of German capitalists, from the center of German heavy industry, frontally attacked the governing parliamentary coalition. It did so to stop the extension of socioeco…
