The Oxford Handbook Of Thomas Middleton
"The 37 essays in The Oxford Handbook of Thomas Middleton reinterpret the English Renaissance through the lens of one of its most original, and least understood, geniuses. Shakespeare's younger contemporary and collaborator, Middleton wrote modern comedies, tragedies, tragicomedies, history plays, masques, pageants, pamphlets, and poetry. The largest collection of new Middleton criticism ever assembled, this ambitious Handbook provides a comprehe…
The Quest for Cardenio: Shakespeare, Fletcher, Cervantes, and the Lost Play
Celebrating the quatercenary of publication of the first translation of Don Quixote, this book addresses the ongoing debates about the lost Jacobean play The History of Cardenio, based on Cervantes, and commonly claimed to be by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher. In June 2011, the Security Council…

Introduction: E Pluribus Verum
T he following essays speak for themselves. One need not patronize authors or readers with attempts at summation and paraphrase. This introduction reflects briefly on their significance as part of an ongoing attempt to trace out both a discourse and a subject of investigation in a rapidly evolving field of multidisciplinary inquiry. The immediate focus of this collection is constructions of race in the early modern Atlantic world. But that needs …

Introducing this edition, Gary Taylor shows how Shakespeare shaped his historical material, examines controversial critical interpretations, discusses the play's fluctuating fortunes in performance, and analyses the range and variety of Shakespeare's characterization. The first Folio text is radically rethought, making original use of the First Quarto (1600).
Julius Caesar The Noblest Moment of Them All
But a play is felt a brick at a time. Its parts are perceived not simultaneously but one by one. Even at play’s end, though we have seen every part, only one is before us; the others are present in memory only, and imperfectly. No one mind, not even Shakespeare’s, can contain King Lear in a single act of perception. Furthermore, though all bricks are more or less alike, all scenes, all speeches, all lines of poetry are not, but vary in quality fr…
