Henry Max Hoenigswald Anna Morpurgo Davies Henry Hoenigswald (1915–2003) was one of the many refugees from Germany who arrived in the United States in the late 1930s and succeeded in finding their way into the academic world of their new country. The start was not auspicious. Henry's university education (in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy) had been continuously interrupted through no wish of his own. The need is particularly great in the case of the languages of the Luwian group: Cuneiform Luwian, Hieroglyphic Luwian and Lycian. In what follows I shall try to collect some data which concern the nominal inflection of Hieroglyphic Luwia…

  • Negation and Disjunction in Anatolian—and elsewhere

    Open Access•Anna Morpurgo Davies•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1975•Cited by: 1•References: 4

    1. In the article which precedes Mr. Hawkins has proposed the readings NEG 2 and NEG 3 for the signs of Hieroglyphic Luwian and has argued that these logograms had the phonetic values na and ni respectively. These readings are supported by internal evidence and do not require any further justification, but it is necessary to see how plausible their consequences are from the linguistic point of view. 1.1. The discovery of two negative particles, a…
