  • A high-precision chronological model for the decorated Upper Paleolithic cave of Chauvet-Pont d’Arc, Ardèche, France

Open Access•Anita Quiles, Helene Valladas et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2016

Significance We compiled a set of more than 250 radiocarbon dates related to the rock art, human activities, and bone remains in the Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave (Ardèche, France) and derive a modeled absolute chronology of the human and cave bear occupations of this site, presented here in calendar years. It provides an insightful framework for the successive events that occurred in the cave during the Paleolithic period.

  • Uranium-series dating of carbonate formations overlying Paleolithic art

Randall White, Helene Valladas et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin de la Société…•2014•Cited by: 6

The Uranium-Thorium (U/ Th) series dating method, developed 50 years ago, has proven its usefulness and reliability for the dating of marine (corals) and continental (speleothems) secondary carbonates deposits. Recently, improvements of the analytical techniques (TIMS – Thermo-Ionization Mass Spectrometry, and then MC-ICPMS – Multicollector-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy and laser ablation) allow the dating of very small samples and…

  • Towards the Reconstruction of Magdalenian Artistic Techniques

    Open Access•Cassandra Fritz, Carole Fritz•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•1999•Cited by: 30•References: 9

On the assumption that Magdalenian mobiliary art is the bearer of certain technical traditions which express cognitive and cultural values, research is directed towards the identification and appreciation of these values through the understanding of techniques involved in bone engraving. Examination of a set of 90 objects from sites in southwest France sheds light on repeated artistic activity and graphic ‘recipes’ which do not appear to be chara…

    Open Access•Cassandra Fritz, Carole Fritz•ARTICLE•Trabajos de Prehistoria•1997•Cited by: 2
