  • Geoarchaeological study of abandoned Roman urban and suburban contexts from central Adriatic Italy

Open Access•Frank Vermeulen, Possum Pincé et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Over the past 15 years the Potenza Valley Survey project investigated Iron Age to Medieval settlement dynamics in the Central Adriatic Potenza Valley. Part of this research focuses on the Roman abandoned towns of Potentia and Trea by performing an integrated geoarchaeological study of their townscape. This largely noninvasive research consists of remote sensing analysis, geophysical surveys (magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and ground‐penetr…

  • Neolithic occupation of an artesian spring

    François Briois, Beatrix Midant-Reynes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 9

KS043 is a stratified site associated with a complex of artesian springs. The archaeological remains, as well as a series of radiocarbon determinations, date the site to between 4800 and 4200 b.c. Our study suggests a connection between Saharan pastoralists, forced to move into oasis areas by increasing aridification, and the first Predynastic cultures of the Nile Valley. The site is the only well dated stratified settlement attributed to the Lat…

  • First evidence of Pleistocene rock art in North Africa

    Open Access•Dirk Huyge, Dimitri A G Vandenberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2011•Cited by: 34•References: 20

Long doubted, the existence of Pleistocene rock art in North Africa is here proven through the dating of petroglyph panels displaying aurochs and other animals at Qurta in the Upper Egyptian Nile Valley. The method used was optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) applied to deposits of wind-blown sediment covering the images. This gave a minimum age of ~15 000 calendar years making the rock engravings at Qurta the oldest so far found in North Afr…

This article presents, for the first time, multidisciplinary geoarchaeological work by a joint Belgo-Italian team from the universities of Ghent and Cassino in and around the Roman urban site of Ammaia in the northern Alentejo region of Portugal. This project is a geoarchaeological case study to investigate the conditioning effects of landscape and landscape evolution on a Roman urban site (and vice versa) in the Iberian peninsula. Composite imag…
