Charles Bonnet: Analytical Essay on the Faculties of the Soul
Copper at ancient Kerma: A diachronic investigation of alloys and raw materials
This paper describes the first comprehensive study of metal artefacts found at ancient Kerma, Sudan. Covering a period of several millennia, it investigates the development of copper alloy recipes as well as metal provenance through the trace element and lead isotope ratio analysis of forty-eight sampled objects. These include grave goods as well as production waste related to large-scale bronze casting performed at Kerma. This study is part of a…
The Cities of Kerma and Pnubs-Dokki Gel
The two cities of Kerma and Dokki Gel represent the center of an independent Nubian kingdom that stood up to Egyptian hegemony over a long period of time. Archaeological research carried out in Kerma has enabled us to trace the main development phases of the capital and to identify its main institutions, often influenced by Egypt. On the other hand, the city of Dokki Gel is different in nature, and its unusual architecture, displaying oval or cir…
The Eastern Cemetery of Kerma
The Eastern Cemetery of Kerma is located south of the Third Cataract, close to the ancient city that was likely the center of the Kingdom of Kerma. It extends over 70 hectares and contains about 40,000 graves. Its development from north to south covers the whole duration of the Kerma civilization (2500–1500 bce) and gives a general idea of the richness of funerary rituals and of the process of social stratification. At its beginning, the graves, …
The Black Kingdom of the Nile
For centuries, Egyptian civilization has been at the origin of the story we tell about the West. But Charles Bonnet’s archaeological excavations have unearthed extraordinary sites in modern Sudan that challenge this notion and compel us to look to black Africa and the Nubian Kingdom of Kush, where a highly civilized state existed 2500–1500 BCE.
Black Kingdom of the Nile
The archaeological researches conducted at Kerma and Dukki Gel, in Northern Sudan, by the Swiss-Franco-Sudanese Mission allow us to evoke the cultures of the Nile valley and to restore the east-west roads including Punt on the Red Sea, Kassala, Kordofan or Darfur. The remains found 500 km north of those roads seems to correspond to an outpost of the first African kingdoms. Thanks to the discovery of an unknown architecture represented by numerous…

The Riedwihr II barrow was in use for 1500 years and, although partially levelled, has yielded the remains of 21 burials dating from the Early Bronze Age to the early La Tène, together with a tomb dating from the 10th century AD set into the tumulus. Three quarters of the burials date from the Hallstatt period, and are characterised by grave goods which are rather poor but often original in view of the regional rarity of certain objects. Thanks t…

Excavations at the Nubian royal town of Kerma: 1975-91
Kerma is an ancient city on the Nile in Middle Nubia, long known and the subject of renewed recent exploration. Its position, at the southern limit of Egyptian control, sets it strategically on the routes to the African interior. Its environment in the arid desert results in remarkable preservation of organic remains
The archaeological site of the cathedral of Saint Peter (Saint-Pierre), Geneva
Over the last ten years, archaeological investigation of the Cathedral of Saint‐Pierre at Geneva has been carried out in conjunction with the restoration of the building, allowing the origins of the episcopal group to be defined and its architectural evolution studied. The group, complete as early as the fourth century, consists of two cathedrals on either side of a baptistry, reception halls, various annexes and the Bishop's residence. During th…
