The Late Palaeolithic Workshop Features
The paper presents features related to lithic production from the Late Palaeolithic site in Kocierz in NW Poland. Such features are known from several Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites, mainly from Central Europe. They are a large pit used as a working area, as well as six smaller pits that are completely filled with cores and debitage. The lithics registered in features were analyzed using the chaîne opératoire concept to determine the stag…
Organiczny czy mineralny? Technika miękkiego tłuka w późnym paleolicie na wybranych stanowiskach z terenu Pomorza Zachodniego
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań nad techniką miękkiego tłuka użytą do wykonania wiórów krzemiennych znalezionych na wybranych stanowiskach z późnego paleolitu z terenu Pomorza Zachodniego.
New radiocarbon dates for ornamented Mesolithic objects from north-west Poland
During the northern European Mesolithic, new types of objects were ornamented with different geometric motifs. Many examples, however, are stray finds and their dating is poorly understood. The authors present new AMS radiocarbon dates for ornamented artefacts from Pomerania that contribute to an absolute chronology of Mesolithic art and allow for new consideration of connections between cultural groups in the western Baltic region. A baton, feat…
Useless Stones? The Potential of Lithics in Palaeodemographic Research
The following paper will pose a number of questions concerning the usefulness and potential of lithics in palaeodemographic research. Lithic material is the most common find among Stone Age sites in Central and Northern Europe. Osteological material is extremely rare and can therefore not form the basis for demographic analysis. However, previous studies have shown that in some cases a detailed analysis of lithics can provide information concerni…
