  • When the River Began—The Formation of River Motala Ström and Human Presence in the Early Holocene, Sweden

Open Access•J Bergman, Anna Plikk et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

In conjunction with the extensive archaeological projects conducted at the current outlet of Sweden’s second largest lake, Lake Vättern, macrofossil, pollen and diatom records have been studied from 14C-dated lake and river sediments from River Motala Ström in Motala and Lake Boren. These investigations have revealed sedimentary evidence of the Yoldia Sea regression, the Ancient Lake Vättern transgression, and the following stepwise river formati…

  • Landscape development at Lina myr fen, Eastern Gotland, 9000−2500 cal. yr BP

    Open Access•Nichola A Strandberg, Aleftin Barliaev et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Using diatoms, pollen, and geochemistry, we explore human habitation around Lina myr, Gotland, in relation to shore displacement. Archeological evidence has shown that Lina myr was an important area for its prehistoric human inhabitants. We investigate if and when Lina myr was connected to the sea and could therefore have been part of an inland water system useful for transport. A chronology was based on 14 C AMS dating of terrestrial macrofossil…

  • Holocene relative shore-level changes and Stone Age palaeogeography of the Pärnu Bay area, eastern Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Triine Nirgi, Alar Rosentau et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 12

The shore displacement and palaeogeography of the Pärnu Bay area, eastern Baltic Sea, during the Stone Age, were reconstructed using sedimentological and archaeological proxies and GIS-based landscape modelling. We discovered and studied buried palaeochannel sediments on the coastal lowland and in the shallow offshore of the Pärnu Bay and interpreted these data together with previously published shore displacement evidence. The reconstructed rela…

  • Vegetation dynamics within the savanna biome in southern Mozambique during the late Holocene

    Open Access•Elin Norström, Helena Öberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•References: 18

This study explores temporal dynamics within grassland and Miombo woodland ecosystems in southern Mozambique and their potential coupling to hydro-climate change during the late-Holocene period. Palaeo-reconstructions are based on phytolith and diatom assemblages and mineral magnetic properties in fossil sediments from Lake Chilau, southern Mozambique. Phytolith interpretation was aided by previous ecological studies on modern plants and soils. T…

  • Precolonial Agricultural Terracing in Bokoni, South Africa

Mats Widgren, Tim Maggs et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Earlier work on the terraced settlements of the Bokoni area (16 th to 19 th century, Mpumalanga province, South Africa) focussed on the homesteads, their contents, layout and chronology. This paper suggests a terminology and typology of agrarian structures in Bokoni in order to improve comparative approaches in Africa and beyond. The typology and an excavation of the terracing permit possible preliminary conclusions relevant for the further analy…

  • High-resolution environmental reconstruction in SW Peloponnese, Greece, covering the last c . 6000 years

    Open Access•Christos Katrantsiotis, Elin Norström et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 17

A paleolimnological record from the central Messenian plain (southwestern Peloponnese, southern Greece) indicates rapid changes in the water level and chemistry of a transient lake on the flanks of the Taygetos Mountains during the last c. 6000 years. The analyses are based on diatoms as well as carbon and nitrogen isotopes from bulk sediments in a 7.5-m-long sediment core retrieved from the drained fen of Agios Floros, at the northern banks of t…

  • Ground‐penetrating Radar and Geological Study of the Kudruküla Stone Age Archaeological Site, Northeast Estonia

    Open Access•Alina Tšugai, Jüri Plado et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 2

A combined ground‐penetrating radar (GPR), drilling and diatom survey was carried out in order to characterize formation of the Kudruküla Stone Age Comb Ware archaeological site, northeast Estonia. A few decades ago a cultural layer was discovered, located within fine‐grained sands of the right bank of the Kudruküla Stream an altitude of 1.25–1.60 m above sea level. The layer is 15–35 cm thick and composed of poorly sorted sand of intensive reddi…

  • Coastal forest and Miombo woodland history of the Vilankulo region, Mozambique

    Open Access•Anneli Ekblom, Jan Risberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The present day distribution of Miombo savanna-woodland in Mozambique has been attributed to an expansion due to the clearing of original coastal forests through agriculture and use of fire. Here, we test this hypothesis using palaeoecological data from Lake Nhauhache, situated in the Vilankulo region. Our analysis shows that Brachystegia, one of the main constituents of the Miombo, has varied over time, and its variability seems to be driven by …

  • Archaeology, forensics and the death of a child in Late Neolithic Sweden

Open Access•Anne Carlie, Caroline Arcini et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The discovery of a child's skeleton in a Late Neolithic well in Sweden raises again the issue of watery rituals and human sacrifice in prehistoric societies. Analysis of diatoms from the right humerus and from the surrounding sediment indicated that the child died by drowning and had not simply been disposed of in the well after death. The scenarios of accidental drowning and murder are examined to account for this discovery. The preferred hypoth…

  • Siliceous microfossils as late-Quaternary paleo-environmental indicators at Braamhoek wetland, South Africa

    Open Access•Martin Finné, Elin Norström et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 11

A peat-sequence covering the last 16 ka (16 000 cal. yr BP) from Braamhoek wetland, eastern South Africa, was analysed in terms of phytolith and diatom composition. The fossil peat was rich in phytoliths, while diatoms were less prominent, probably as a result of degradation during wetland plant growth associated with silica uptake. With this study we present the first continuous phytolith and diatom record from South Africa covering the Late Ple…

  • Human activity and the environment during the Late Iron Age and Middle Ages at the Impiltis archaeological site, NW Lithuania

Open Access•Miglė Stančikaitė, Petras Šinkūnas et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2009

  • Variable isostatic uplift patterns during the Holocene in southeast Sweden, based on high-resolution AMS radiocarbon datings of lake isolations

    Open Access•Jan Risberg, Göran Alm et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 13

The construction of a new highway between Uppsala and Mehedeby in northern Uppland, southeastern Sweden, has motivated extensive archaeological excavations. To describe changes in shoreline configuration over time, the isolation of nine lake basins has been interpreted from diatom analysis. Their isolation ages were determined from 45 AMS radiocarbon dates (five per site) of terrestrial macrofossils, mainly Betula and Alnus seeds. The isolation a…

  • Environmental changes and human impact as recorded in a sediment sequence offshore from a Viking Age town, Birka, southeastern Sweden

    Open Access•Jan Risberg, Sven Karlsson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The Viking Age town of Birka, which existed between AD 750 and 975, on the island of Björkö in the Mälar archipelago of the Baltic Sea, is known as the oldest centre used for large-scale international trading in Sweden. Birka had a strong defence: town rampart, hillfort and a water palisade. Studies of lithology, and microand macroremains in a sedimentary sequence accumulated offshore from Birka, outside the water palisade, revealed a stratigraph…

  • Deglaciation, shore displacement and early-Holocene vegetation history in eastern middle Sweden

    Open Access•Stefan Wastegård, Jonas Björck et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•References: 8

The sedimentary record at Lake Vibysjo lake basin is situated close to the Närke Strait where the main water exchange occurred between the Vänern basin and Baltic basin during the middle and late phases of the Yoldia Sea stage of the Baltic Sea (c. 10 000– 9500 14 C years BP). The area was deglaciated in a glaciomarine environment, as reflected by the occurrence of benthic calcareous fossils (foraminifera, ostracods and the mollusc Portlandia arc…
