  • Where Craft Starts

Tom Martins•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern Craft•2024

This essay illustrates my pedagogical approach on the MA in Critical Craft Studies (MACR) and explains some of the philosophical commitments that underpinned my teaching there. Working as Core Faculty on the program for three years, I regularly led students through embodied ethnographic trials as a way to help them tune their attention to the kind of everyday understanding so often overlooked in academic research. In addition to being the kind of…

  • Ethnography from Home

Open Access•Tom Martins, Tom Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2024

How do you teach fieldwork methods when your students are suddenly prevented from entering the field? This was a pressing question faced by faculty at Guttman Community College who were teaching Ethnographies of Work, a required first-year course centered on the observation and analysis of real-world workplace dynamics. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the in-person workplace observations that the course was designed around became largely impossible…

  • Calculations without math

    Open Access•Tom Martins, Sam Dillavou•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Cognitive…•2024•References: 3

This paper considers a historical boat building practice in light of Runeson’s (Scan J Psychol 18:172–179, 1977) concept of ‘smart instruments’, tools that exploit particular features of situated processes to aid their users in complex cognitive operations. The key example here is that of the ‘spiling stick,’ a flexible baton used to determine the two-dimensional shape of board stock that will eventually twist to fit a three-dimensional position …

  • Relational Perception and ‘the feel’ for Tools in the Wooden Boat Workshop

    Open Access•Tom Martins•ARTICLE•Phenomenology & Practice•2020

This paper presents insights into the lived experience of maritime carpentry practices, based on six months of sensory-ethnographic fieldwork as a wooden boat builder’s apprentice. In particular, the author explores the widely-reported experience of tools ‘withdrawing’ from consciousness as craftspeople master their use. Without contradicting these interpretations – many of which are constructed by way of reference to ideas from Merleau-Ponty – t…

    Tom Martins•ARTICLE•Mind Culture and Activity•2012

  • Own-Race-Absent Racism

Tom Martins, Tom Martin•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2009•References: 1

I propose that a distinction can be drawn between two fundamental kinds of racism: own-race-present racism and own-race-absent racism. In own-racepresent racism, the race of the racist figures as a term in her racist thinking; in own-race-absent racism it does not. While own-race-present racism might conform readily to commonsense understandings of racism, own-race-absent racism less clearly does. I provide evidence that these two kinds are there…

  • Cambodia after Untac

    Open Access•Tom Martins•ARTICLE•Policy and Society•1997•References: 8

The UN's unprecedented commitment in Cambodia was to be the harbinger of a revived role for the UN in enhancing international peace and security in the post-Cold War era. However, in the initial optimism associated with this renewed hope, the nature of the challenge the UN faces in cases of international intervention was not fully recognised. This paper focuses on the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) and the nature of Cam…
