  • Testing inter-observer error under a collaborative research framework for studying lithic shape variability

    Open Access•L Timbrell, Christopher Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 14•References: 59

Evaluating error that arises through the aggregation of data recorded by multiple observers is a key consideration in many metric and geometric morphometric analyses of stone tool shape. One of the most common approaches involves the convergence of observers for repeat trails on the same set of artefacts: however, this is logistically and financially challenging when collaborating internationally and/or at a large scale. We present and evaluate a…

Open Access•Ada Miltz, Ada R Miltz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2021

Providers need to be aware of cannabis and cocaine use and its potential link with sexual risk behavior and symptoms of depression and anxiety among heterosexual men and women attending sexual health and HIV clinics

  • Is Acheulean Handaxe Shape the Result of Imposed ‘Mental Templates’ or Emergent in Manufacture? Dissolving the Dichotomy through Exploring ‘Communities of Practice’ at Boxgrove, UK

    Open Access•Laurie Hutchence, Christopher Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 83

This paper examines the debate over whether Acheulean handaxe shape results from the intentional imposition of a priorly held mental template upon the lithic material substrate or, alternatively, whether a knapper's intentions related to shape ‘emerge’ through the engagement (in action) of human agency and material affordances. We suggest that imposition of form and emergence of form are not mutually exclusive, and use Lave and Wenger's concept o…

  • Urban water security: A comparative study of cities in the arid Americas

    Open Access•Rolando E Díaz Caravantes, Adriana Zuniga-Teran et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In this study we analyse how three cities in the arid Americas have addressed urban growth while facing water scarcity: Hermosillo, Mexico; Mendoza, Argentina; and Tucson, USA. We use the urban water security framework to examine five domains of water management: sociodemographic, economic, technological, ecological and governance (SETEG). Our analysis indicates that, in spite of water scarcity, urban growth has been promoted in the three cities.…

Open Access•Ada Miltz, Alec Rodger et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2019

The aim of this study is to investigate five hypothesized mechanisms of causation between depression and condomless sex with ≥ 2 partners (CLS2+) among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), involving alternative roles of self-efficacy for sexual safety and recreational drug use. Data were from the AURAH cross-sectional study of 1340 GBMSM attending genitourinary medicine clinics in England (2013-2014). Structural equation mo…

  • Collective agro-energy generation in family agriculture: The ajuricaba condominium case study in Brazil

Open Access•Janaina Camile Pasqual Lofhagen, Harry Alberto Bollmann et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Tecnologia e Sociedade•2018

One of the challenges in the agribusiness sector in Brazil, the 4th largest food producer in the world, is to assess the effectiveness of participatory methods to convert animal manure into economic assets. In this scenario, biogas and biomethane stand out as renewable sources of energy available in all countries and their uses can significantly induce local and regional economic development. This study will present an arrangement known as agroen…

  • Evolving conceptions of the role of large dams in social-ecological resilience

    Open Access•Mia A Hammersley, Christopher A Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2018•Cited by: 1

Rivers and riparian ecosystems have historically provided a range of beneficial goods and services to human societies. However, floodplains have also posed risks to the humans that came to rely upon them. Although riparian areas are among the most resource-rich and biodiverse ecosystems, they are also some of the most disturbed by human activity. Today, social and economic needs for water diverted off-stream are often pitted against the flow of w…

  • Hochschullehrerprivileg—A Modern Incarnation of the Professor’s Privilege to Promote University to Industry Technology Transfer

Open Access•Dov Greenbaum, Christopher Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Science Technology and Society•2010

Technology transfer offices are ubiquitous institutions within American universities. Most are underfunded and understaffed, will never turn a profit, drain limited university resources and potentially hinder innovation and knowledge transfer. Yet, inexplicably, new offices continue to be established. This article suggests that the continued hype over rare but lucrative blockbuster patents fuels much of this unnecessary expansion. These new offic…

  • Mixed fortunes: A study of poverty mobility among small farm households in Chile, 1968–86

Christopher Scott, Christopher D Scott•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2000

This study is based on a panel sample of small farm households drawn from eight rural communities in Chile interviewed in 1968 and 1986. The incidence and intensity of poverty based on primary income increased over this period. However, after including earnings from the minimum employment programmes and public transfers, both the headcount ratio and squared poverty gap fell markedly between the two surveys. Mobility analysis showed more household…

    Christopher Scott, Christopher G Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1970•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In censuses and surveys in most African countries it has become the practice to estimate informants' age by the method of the historical calendar. This involves an attempt to relate a remembered historical event, occurring during the subject's childhood, with his age at the time. This paper attempts a first evaluation of the method with particular reference to the 1961-63 multi-round survey in rural Morocco. It is shown that in practice the metho…
