Tensions that stultify education: School principals reflecting on their professional relationships
This paper explores the relationships that principals identify as most significant to their leadership and how these shape their professional identities. Drawing on Foucault’s concept of the ‘made subject’ and Biesta’s ‘impulse society’, the study situates principalship within a web of power relations that render the principal both accountable and emotionally vulnerable. Interviews with sixteen principals identified five key relationships, with e…
Building a Coaching Culture in Irish Schools; Challenges and Opportunities: A Mixed-Methods Study
Coaching is a relatively new leadership style in Irish schools, but its potential is being supported by the Department of Education and Skills since 2015. This study considers the challenges and obstacles to building a coaching culture within Irish schools, recognising that as a leadership style, it is relatively unknown. It considers school cultures and the challenges as well as the opportunities leaders face in building a coaching culture. A mi…

The Problem of State Violence
When violence occurs, the state has an obligation to respond to and reduce the impacts of it; yet often the state originates, or at least contributes to, the violence. This may occur in a variety of ways, including through the use of force by police, pretrial incarceration at local jails, long periods of incarceration in prisons, or abuse and neglect of people who are incarcerated. This essay explores the role of the state in responding to violen…
A 45-year sub-annual reconstruction of seawater temperature in the Bay of Brest, France, using the shell oxygen isotope composition of the bivalve Glycymeris glycymeris
A reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) spanning 45 years (1966–2011) was developed from δ 18 O obtained from the aragonitic shells of Glycymeris glycymeris, collected from the Bay of Brest, France. Bivalve sampling was undertaken monthly between 2014 and 2015 using a dredge. In total, 401 live specimens and 243 articulated paired valves from dead specimens were collected, of which 24 individuals were used to reconstruct SST. Temperatur…

A sclerochronological archive for Antarctic coastal waters based on the marine bivalve Yoldia eightsi (Jay, 1839) from the South Orkney Islands
The scarcity of long instrumental series from the Southern Ocean limits our understanding of key climate and environmental feedbacks within the Antarctic system. We present an assessment for the Antarctic mollusc bivalve Yoldia eightsi as an Antarctic coastal climatological archive, based on annually-resolved growth pattern of 20 live-collected specimens in 1988 from Factory Cove, Signy Island (South Orkney Islands). Two detrending methods were a…
The potential of the marine bivalve mollusc Glossus humanus (L.) as a sclerochronological archive
In order to assess its potential as a sclerochronological archive, we present statistical and geochemical analyses of internal growth increment series in shells of the heart cockle Glossus humanus (L.), a large marine bivalve. The investigated samples were collected from Loch Sunart and the Sound of Mull, Scotland, United Kingdom. High-resolution stable isotope (δ 18 O) analyses and radiocarbon ( 14 C) determinations indicated that G. humanus for…
Reconstructions of surface ocean conditions from the northeast Atlantic and Nordic seas during the last millennium
We undertake the first comprehensive effort to integrate North Atlantic marine climate records for the last millennium, highlighting some key components common within this system at a range of temporal and spatial scales. In such an approach, careful consideration needs to be given to the complexities inherent to the marine system. Composites therefore need to be hydrographically constrained and sensitive to both surface water mass variability an…
Black Male Exceptionalism: The Problems and Potential of Black Male-Focused Interventions
Black male exceptionalism" is the premise that African American men fare more poorly than any other group in the United States. The discourse of Black male exceptionalism presents African American men as an "endangered species." Some government agencies, foundations, and activists have responded by creating "Black male achievement" programs. There are almost no corresponding "Black female achievement" programs. Yet empirical data does not support…

Novelty‐seeking DRD4 polymorphisms are associated with human migration distance out‐of‐Africa after controlling for neutral population gene structure
Numerous lines of evidence suggest that Homo sapiens evolved as a distinct species in Africa by 150,000 years before the present (BP) and began major migrations out‐of‐Africa ∼50,000 BP. By 20,000 BP, our species had effectively colonized the entire Old World, and by 12,000 BP H. sapiens had a global distribution. We propose that this rapid migration into new habitats selected for individuals with low reactivity to novel stressors. Certain dopami…

Micro macro integration: Reframing primary healthcare practice and community development in health
The idea of micro macro integration (MMI) provides a useful framework for thinking about primary healthcare (PHC) and community development in health (CD). PHC and CD are important strategies for addressing the structural determinants of health. They are each based on a powerful logic and have a significant body of support. However, while exemplary, even inspiring, instances of practice are common, attempts to replicate models of good practice (o…

Relative efficiency of preferred and nonpreferred patterns of lateralized foraging in the gentle lemur ( Hapalemur griseus )
Lateralized patterns of hand use in species‐typical bamboo shoot foraging were evaluated for efficiency in five female and six male gentle lemurs ( Hapalemur griseus sp. ). Efficiency was defined as amount of time required to complete a foraging response sequence. The foraging pattern consisted of four component movements: PULL‐IN, COUNTERFORCE, TURN, and FEED‐IN. These component movements had been shown in a previous study to incorporate lateral…
