Open Access•João Zilhão, Lucas Ageby et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025

La Boja is a rock-shelter located in Murcia (Spain) whose c. 7 m infilling spans the last 50,000 years of the Pleistocene. Though punctuated by a few episodes of stasis or erosion, sediment accumulation proceeded at a regular rate, while human occupation was intermittent and light. This pattern allowed for the preservation of 31 well-separated Occupation Horizons whose stratigraphic integrity is demonstrated by stone tool refitting, the pristine …

Interaction between hominins and carnivores has been common and constant through human evolution and generated mutual pressures similar to those present in worldwide modern human-carnivore conflicts. This current interaction is sometimes violent and can be reflected in permanent skeletal pathologies and other bone modifications. In the present paper, we carry out a survey of 124 forensic cases of dangerous human-carnivore encounters. The objectiv…

  • Not Only Flint: Levallois on Quartzite and Limestone at Abrigo de la Quebrada (Valencia, Spain): Implications for Neandertal Behavior

    A Eixea, Villaverde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2016•Cited by: 14•References: 22

This paper investigates the application of the Levallois technique to the knapping of nonflint raw materials (limestone and quartzite) in the upper levels of the Abrigo de la Quebrada rockshelter (Chelva, Valencia, Spain). Besides highlighting the significant flexibility that characterized Neandertal behavior, such an application is of singular interest because goodquality flint-lacking fissures and impurities and presenting a compact and homogen…

  • Middle Palaeolithic flint procurement in Central Mediterranean Iberia: Implications for human mobility

Open Access•A Eixea, Clodoaldo Roldán et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2014•Cited by: 27•References: 1

Different flint types from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Valencia) are characterized, both macro- and microscopically, and compared with types found at other localities in the region. Although procurement predominantly concerned the immediate vicinity of sites, our results show the presence of the same types in assemblages separated by distances of up to 120 km. The long distances involved are suggestive of a patt…
