  • Radiocarbon Dating of Oracle Bones of Late Shang Period in Ancient China

Open Access•Kexin Liu, Xiaohong Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Oracle bone script developed into a sophisticated writing system in Shang Dynasty of China more than 3000 years ago. The systematic scientific dating of oracle bones had not been previously reported. Here we present radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates measured from the sequential samples of oracle bones that pertain to the Shang kings. The results indicate that King Wu Ding (who is called Wu Ting in some literature) reigned during 1254 BC to 1197 BC, and t…

  • Radiocarbon in the Maritime Air and Sea Surface Water of the South China Sea

Open Access•Pan Gao, Liping Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 38

Radiocarbon ( 14 C) generated by the thermonuclear tests in the late 1950s to early 1960s has been used as a tracer to study atmospheric and oceanic circulations, carbon exchange between different reservoirs, and fossil fuel emissions. Here we report the first measurements of 14 C in atmospheric CO 2 of maritime air collected over the South China Sea (SCS) during July 2014. We also present 14 C of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the sea s…

  • Seasonal 14 C and Sr/Ca Records of a Modern Coral around Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plants

Open Access•Ning Wang, Chengde Shen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•References: 53

Due to an increasing number of nuclear reactors in operation, the radiocarbon ( 14 C) released from nuclear power plants (NPPs) has become an important anthropogenic source of 14 C. The examination of seasonal Δ 14 C and monthly Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca variations in a coral in Daya Bay (China) shows that NPPs located there have an impact on the Δ 14 C level and sea surface temperature (SST). The Mg/Ca variation was in good correlation with the Pacific Decad…

  • A Simple Way to Upgrade a Compact Radiocarbon AMS Facility for 10 Be

A simple way to upgrade the Peking University 500kV NEC radiocarbon facility (CAMS) for 10 Be measurements is presented. In a first phase, a silicon nitride foil as passive boron degrader was mounted in front of the electrostatic deflector near the focal plane of 10 Be. The Si detector at the end of the beam line was replaced with a high-resolution ΔE-E res gas ionization chamber. In addition, a Faraday cup for the measurement of 9 Be 1+ was inst…

Open Access•Xiangdong Ruan, Yongjing Guan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•References: 7

An ancient pottery workshop belonging to the Han Dynasty was excavated in Caoxie village, Hepu County. Caoxie village is an important archaeological site in Hepu County, Beihai City, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is believed that Hepu County was the oldest departure point on the ancient maritime trading route during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to AD 220) due to the ideal natural geographical conditions and the existence of a l…

Yuchanyan Cave in Daoxian County, Hunan Province (People's Republic of China), yielded fragmentary remains of 2 or more ceramic vessels, in addition to large amounts of ash, a rich animal bone assemblage, cobble and flake artifacts, bone tools, and shell tools. The artifacts indicate that the cave was a Late Paleolithic foragers' camp. Here we report on the radiocarbon ages of the sediments based on analyses of charcoal and bone collagen. The bes…

  • Removal of Contaminants from Oracle Bones During Sample Pretreatment

Open Access•Sixun Yuan, Xiaohong Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 9

Animal bones and tortoise shells were used for divination by the Chinese royal family during the Shang Dynasty (∼16th–11th century BC), and the divination results were recorded as inscriptions on oracle bones and shells, which are very valuable cultural remains and record many important events in the Shang Dynasty period. Thus, radiocarbon dating of oracle bones was used to build a precise chronology of the late Shang Dynasty. Due to their origin…
