  • Superficial reddening of silcrete may indicate low temperature heat treatment

    Open Access•A Mackay, Jack L Mcgarry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 5

  • Silcrete use and heat treatment in the middle stone age at Nelson Bay cave, South Africa

  • Quantifying the effect of heating temperature on silcrete blank production

    Open Access•Sara Watson, Sara E Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 52

  • Small tool production in the Howiesons Poort

Sara E Watson, Tamara Dogandžić et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2023•References: 72

In southern Africa, the Howiesons Poort is one of the earliest technocomplexes in which small blades and bladelets were systematically produced and retouched into formal tools. While the presence of small lithic artefacts in an assemblage is well-documented, little is known about production pathways. This paper reports on the analysis of the lithic assemblage from Horizon 6/7 of Charles Keller’s excavations of Montagu Cave, South Africa, to evalu…

  • Association between Physical Activity and Sport Participation on Hemoglobin A1c Among Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes

    Open Access•Kristi M King, Jason R Jaggers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study demonstrated the significant relationship between daily PA and HbA1c. Those in this sample presented with lower HbA1c values even if accumulating less than the recommended number of days of activity. Further, it was shown that sport participation alone may not be adequate enough to impact HbA1c in a similar manner

  • What causes differences in fracture rates of silcrete during heat treatment? A near-infrared study of water-related transformations in South African silcretes

    Open Access•Sara E Watson, Shezani Nasoordeen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•References: 17

Discussions of heat treatment in the southern African Middle Stone Age often focus on the importance of this innovation to the development of complex technologies and the evolution of modern human cognition. Debates regarding the context of silcrete heat treatment typically include the amount of time and resource investment needed, and when the earliest occurrences of heat treatment appear in the archaeological record. However, silcrete is a hete…

  • Best Practices for Conducting Clinical Trials With Indigenous Children in the United States

Jennifer L Shaw, Erin Semmens et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2021•References: 31

We provide guidance for conducting clinical trials with Indigenous children in the United States. We drew on extant literature and our experience to describe 3 best practices for the ethical and effective conduct of clinical trials with Indigenous children. Case examples of pediatric research conducted with American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities are provided to illustrate these practices. Ethical and effective clinical tr…

  • Robberg Material Procurement and Transport in the Doring River Catchment

Sara E Watson, Marika Low et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 25

Decisions related to the production of lithic technology involve landscape-scale patterns of resource acquisition and transport that are not observable in assemblages from any one single site. In this study, we describe the stone artifacts from a discrete cluster of stone artifacts assigned to the Robberg technocomplex (22-16 ka) at the open-air locality of Uitspankraal 9 ( UPK 9), which is located near two major sources of toolstone in the Dorin…

  • The Left Divided

Sara Ruth Watson, Sara Watson et al.•BOOK•The left divided•2015

Why do some countries construct strong systems of social protection, while others leave workers exposed to market forces? One of the most robust findings of the comparative political economy literature is the claim that the more political resources are controlled by the left, the more likely a country is to have generous, universal welfare states. In contrast, this book argues that the strength of the far left is an important and overlooked deter…
