Who Lives in a STEM Desert
STEM deserts, similar to education deserts, are rural, suburban, and urban areas where students have limited access to school-based STEM curriculum and coursework opportunities. Using administrative data from the Houston Independent School District following a state policy change to high school graduation requirements, this study develops measures of STEM deserts and identifies the students most likely to live in them. Findings reveal that Black …
Artificial stupidity and coping strategies
While artificial intelligence (AI) is supposed to augment the capability of human beings, paradoxically, it could also dehumanize, suppress, and demobilize them and result in mistakes, failures, and even disasters, actually manifesting itself in some forms of artificial stupidity (AS). This article dissects two basic types of artificial stupidity -- replacement and enslavement -- and suggests corresponding coping strategies. Replacement happens w…
Digitalized opportunity space and managerial archetypes: An opportunity-centric perspective on digital innovation and transformation
Non-healthcare system interventions and Covid-19 daily cases: A multilevel time series analysis
In designing epidemic control policies, due consideration should be given to factors such as income group, as well as medical, demographic, and social differences among nations influenced by economic factors. In policy-making, policymakers should pay greater attention to policy implementation and people's responses, in order to maximize the effectiveness and adherence of such policies

Effects of household solid fuel use on sarcopenia in middle-aged and older adults: Evidence from a nationwide cohort study
Background: Household solid fuel use is common in global households and has been linked to changes in handgrip strength and muscle mass. However, whether household solid fuel use results in sarcopenia over time is not well elaborated. Methods: This study employed data from the 2011-2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) that recruited 4,932 participants ≥45 years. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was conducted t…

The physicochemical characteristics and antidepressant-like effects of a polysaccharide-rich fraction from Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill in behavioral despair mice and olfactory bulbectomy-induc…
Body composition, lifestyle, and depression: A prospective study in the UK biobank
High levels of body composition measures were associated with an increased depression risk. Adverse body composition measures may weaken the link between a healthy lifestyle and a reduced risk of depression

Brown carbon from biomass burning imposes strong circum-Arctic warming
Informal Community Growing Characteristics and the Satisfac-tion of Concerned Residents in Mountainous Urban Areas of Southwest China
Due to the mountainous terrain in the urban areas of southwest China, there are a large number of barren slopes in the community unsuitable for construction. These areas, alongside other unusable space which is often cultivated by residents to create informal community vegetable gardens and fruit growing areas, have become a “gray area” for urban management. This paper attempts to study the characteristics of informal community growing, the compo…
Reduction Effect of Carbon Emission Trading Policy in Decreasing PM2.5 Concentrations in China
Carbon emissions trading is a market-based tool for solving environmental issues. This study used a difference-in-differences (DID) approach to estimate China's carbon trading pilots to reduce PM 2.5 concentrations. The results of this quasi-natural experiment show that the carbon trading policy effectively reduces PM 2.5 by 2.7 μg/m 3 . We used a propensity score matching (PSM-DID) method to minimize selection bias to construct a treatment and a…
Development and promise of a vocabulary intelligent tutoring system for Second-Grade Latinx English learners
We examine the promise, usability, and feasibility of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) to improve the vocabulary and language proficiency in science and social studies of Latinx second grade English learners (ELs). Participants were 217 ELs attending English only programs or bilingual programs. Findings from the clustered randomized control trial using a researcher-developed proximal assessment indicated that students who used the ITS signifi…
Increasing parental knowledge through workshops on early childhood programs, home literacy, and technology use
This experimental study explores the effects of workshops designed to increase directly the knowledge of Latinx parents, and indirectly, their children’s vocabulary knowledge. Thirty-two Latinx mothers were randomly assigned to either attend six workshops in Spanish (n = 17), or to a wait-list control group (n = 15). Workshops included carefully designed strategies to scaffold the information based on parent English language proficiency, early ch…
An Overview of Microsoft Academic Service (MAS) and Applications
In this paper we describe a new release of a Web scale entity graph that serves as the backbone of Microsoft Academic Service (MAS), a major production effort with a broadened scope to the namesake vertical search engine that has been publicly available since 2008 as a research prototype. At the core of MAS is a heterogeneous entity graph comprised of six types of entities that model the scholarly activities: field of study, author, institution, …
Social Recommendation in Dynamic Networks
Corporate Political Strategies of Private Chinese Firms
This book is about how Chinese entrepreneurs deal with China’s most important institution-the government-in their struggle to survive and even prosper in China’s transitional economy. It takes an "inside look" at several private firms in China and provides a first-hand account, as well as the underlying rationale and decision considerations, of their corporate political strategy. The book is based firmly on solid academic research but actually wr…
