Secularization and Its Discontents
The Shadow of God separates itself from two received conceptions of secularization. One is that secularization represents the retreat of religion in the face of the rise of science and technology. The other is that secularization is the continuation and transposition of religious ideas outside their original context. This essay seeks to give a more nuanced account of the notion. Its conclusion is that secularization is not very helpful for two re…
Responses to Nine Respondents: Journal of the Philosophy of History
This essay responds to nine critics of The Shadow of God . They challenge the book’s ideas in some areas but also seek to extend them. The essay welcomes particularly the discussion of whether the ideas of The Shadow of God can be extended to non-Western societies, the opportunity to explain more clearly what is meant by “discursive transcendentalism”, and the discussion of alternatives to personal immortality in an afterlife. At the same time, i…

Living in the Shadows: Debating Meaning in a Post-Religious World
The Shadow of God combines history and philosophy in a way that is, unlike Hegel, fundamentally pluralistic. It presents the period of German Idealism as a time when philosophers aimed to bring faith and reason together through the idea of autonomy. At the same time, the tensions endemic in that process led to a transfer of individual hope from an afterlife of reward or punishment to participation in a collective, historical process. This article…

Dignity: Its History and Meaning
Dignity plays a central role in current thinking about law and human rights, but there is sharp disagreement about its meaning. Combining conceptual precision with a broad historical background, Michael Rosen puts these controversies in context and offers a novel, constructive proposal. Drawing on law, politics, religion, and culture, as well as philosophy, Rosen shows how modern conceptions of dignity inherit several distinct strands of meaning.…

What Have We Been Missing? Science and Philosophy in Twentieth-Century French Thought
Philosophy of science developed in the nineteenth century from continuations of and reactions to Kant's critical philosophy. The project arose from modern science's challenge to the cognitive authority of traditional philosophy. Galileo, Descartes, and Newton no doubt thought of themselves as philosophers, answering fundamental questions about the nature of planetary and terrestrial motions that had been central for ‘natural philosophy’. It gradu…

The Marxist Critique of Morality and the Theory of Ideology
The question whether Marx’s theory has a moral or ethical dimension is one of the most controversial of all issues of Marx interpretation. The difficulty is easily seen. On the one hand, Marx has a number of uncompromisingly negative things to say about morality. Moreover, after 1845 at least, he affirms that his own theory is not a utopian or ethical one but ‘real positive science’. Yet, on the other hand, much of the language that he uses to de…

Hegel's Dialectic and its Criticism
Hegel's philosophy has often been compared to a circle of circles: an ascending spiral to its admirers, but a vortex to its critics. The metaphor reflects Hegel's claim to offer a conception of philosophical reason so comprehensive as to include all others as partial forms of itself. It is a claim which faces the writer on Hegel with peculiar difficulties. Criticism, it would appear, can always be outflanked; criticism of the system can be turned…

Coming to Terms With the Field: Understanding and Doing Organizational Ethnography
This article argues that ethnography is inadequately understood and recognized within administration science as a method for studying organizational culture. Ethnographic analyses of organizational cultures are largely absent from the administration science literature, primarily because such work derives from a social constructionist understanding of science. The knowledge of organizations thus provided is interpretive, denying the subject—object…
