In the Beginning Was the Tao
There are two main options for translating λόγος Logos in Chinese versions of John 1:1. One is to use 道Tào, which in this context means Wisdom and Creative Principle; the other is to use 言 Yán, which in this context means Holy Word. Our goal is to (1) give a historical overview of the first uses of 道Tao in the Protestant Bible and 言 Yan in the Catholic Bible and (2) discuss what has been lost, modified, or acquired by using Tao, both for Christia…
Humility and Realism in Quantum Physics and Metaphysics
The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the main philosophical and metaphysical implications of quantum physics, especially those which concern the issues of epistemic humility and ontological realism. My thesis is that the impossibility of reaching an objective knowledge of nature does not imply the renunciation of ontological realism, but rather encourages scientists to adopt an attitude of epistemic humility. The argument firstly presents …
Free Play or Not Free Play
In this paper we combine a philosophical theoretical analysis with human movement science empirical studies, in order to provide a better understanding of the possible links between free play and creativity. We deal in particular with some dialectical dynamics inherent to free play: the relation between rules and freedom, spontaneity which often leads to imitation, the presence of a purpose as a necessary element to makes novelty creative, innova…
Francesca Tramontano, Il conflitto pubblico fra religioso e profano
Gaia and the Anthropocene; or, The Return of Teleology
The Gaia hypothesis was formulated for the first time in 1979 by the British biologist James Lovelock. According to this conception, the Earth should be seen as a macro-organism whose purpose is to keep constant the basic ecological conditions that are necessary for the presence of life on the planet's surface. However, often with the support of Lovelock himself, this scientific hypothesis has gone beyond its limits, transforming itself into a so…
