  • Sexual violence and sub-Saharan migrants in Morocco

Open Access•Ines Keygnaert, Abdessamad Dialmy et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2014

BACKGROUND: The European Union contracted Morocco to regulate migration from so-called “transit migrants” from Morocco to Europe via the European Neighbourhood Policy. Yet, international organisations signal that human, asylum and refugee rights are not upheld in Morocco and that many sub-Saharan migrants suffer from ill-health and violence. Hence, our study aimed at 1) investigating the nature of violence that sub-Saharan migrants experience aro…

University students ( N = 301) in Estonia, Morocco, and the United States read scenarios about various scheduled appointments and indicated the time at which a person arriving would be inappropriately early or inappropriately late. • Les antinomies du port du voile

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2008

  • Belonging and Institution in Islam

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2007

English The notion of fitra (state of nature) makes membership in Islam an innate belonging. According to this notion, the Moslem faith is an innate natural order, a quasi-biological given inherent in the individual, from birth. How is this fitra implemented? What rites of passage socialize it? As we see, this different vision of belonging does not involve two actors, the inclividual and the (religious) institution. Thus, it seems sociologically …

  • Sexuality in Contemporary Arab Society

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2005

Arab scholarship of sexuality is currently emerging against many obstacles. This article provides a suggestive introduction to the current state of knowledge in the area. After briefly sketching an archetype of Arab sexuality, especially its peculiar form of phallocracy, new sexual trends are reviewed, some of which adapt current practices to Shari'a law (e.g., visitation marriages), while others break with it altogether (e.g., prostitution). The…

  • Le terrorisme islamiste au Maroc

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2005

English Moroccan Islamic terrorism is a multi-dimensional phenomenon, at once economic, religious, political, cultural and psychological: it can be considered a total social fact. By distinguishing the theoretical/ideological, organizational and executive levels in his analysis, the author attempts to describe this particularly complex phenomenon and identify the different factors making it 'socio-politically' inevitable. He then analyses the org…

  • Les Antinomies De La Raison Islamo-féministe

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Compass•2003

Each separate religious tradition combines in its own way elements which favour discrimination, and other elements which favour the equality of the sexes. Within a single religion, different currents of thought have taken different paths, and within each religion there are varying interpretations of the same texts. The status which a given religion assigns to women (and to men) depends upon the position which that religion occupies within a given…

  • What Does it Mean to be Religious

  • L'Islamisme marocain

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1998

    Open Access•Abdessamad Dialmy•ARTICLE•Social Compass•1996

This article attempts to analyse the relations between feminism and Islamism in the Arab world, that is between the principal contemporary Arab discourses on the Arabic woman. It does so sociologically by considering them as social movements, with due consideration of country contexts. The sociological approach employed is ideal-typical, and falls into two main parts. The first describes the fundamental opposition between feminism and Islamism, s…
