  • Acusaciones de doble rasero en las interacciones civiles

    Open Access•Carlo Tognato•ARTICLE•Perfiles Latinoamericanos•2025•References: 15

  • Civil sphere and democracy in Latin America

    Open Access•Jeffrey C Alexander, Carlo Tognato•ARTICLE•Sociology Theory Methods Marketing•2020

The purpose of the article is to demonstrate that the civil spheres of Latin America remain in force, even when under threat, and to expand the method of theorizing democracy, understanding it not only as a state form, but also as a way of life. • The Civil Sphere in Latin America

Jeffrey Alexander, Carlo Tognato•BOOK•The Civil Sphere in Latin America•2018

Social thinkers have criticized Latin American development as incomplete, backward, and anti-modern. This volume demonstrates that, while often deeply compromised and fragmented, Latin American civil spheres have remained resilient, institutionally and culturally, generating new oppositional movements, independent journalism, rebellious intellectuals, electoral power, and critical political parties. In widely different arenas, dissidents have emp…

This article examines the intellectual mission of a cultural sociology of the economy, its theoretical horizon, and its pragmatic relevance in times of economic crisis. It first considers classical sources of a cultural sociology of the economy before discussing the use of cultural analysis in contemporary economic sociology. It then outlines the central features of a cultural sociology of the economy and emphasizes the moral obligation of schola…

  • Performing 'Legitimate' Torture

    Open Access•Carlo Tognato•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Scholars have traditionally explained away torture as an act of monstrosity. Hannah Arendt has proposed instead a socio-cultural explanation of the phenomenon. Modern rationality, she suggests, constitutes the legitimacy principle that grounds the bureaucracy of repression and that perpetrators can ultimately tap into for the purpose of justifying their deeds. I will suggest, instead, that modern technical rationality is per se not sufficient to …
