I'm not 'fake rural
This article addresses the accessibility of medical education for rural students, focusing on the intersection of rurality and socioeconomic privilege. We present findings from a study of rural background medical students from four Australian medical schools, which explored their experiences of admissions processes and their ongoing socialisation. Participants characterised admissions pathways as complex, requiring social capital to navigate. Tho…
Co-designing multidisciplinary telehealth education for online learning
Purpose There are growing expectations that students graduating from health courses and current health professionals have some proficiency in using telehealth. However, there is limited accessibility to multidisciplinary-based material to meet this need. This paper describes the development of an online telehealth education resource using a co-design approach and the strengths and challenges of embedding authentic learning principles in an open-a…

Mapping health, social and health system issues and applying a social accountability inventory to a problem based learning medical curriculum
Social accountability is a powerful concept. It is applied to medical education to encourage future doctors to take action to address health inequalities and overlooked health needs of disadvantaged populations. The objective of this study is to explore how well the components of social accountability are covered in a pre-clinical PBL medical curr…
Changing Politics in Japan
The Japanese 2009 House of Representatives elections
In the 2009 House of Representatives election in Japan, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) took complete control of the government from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Formed in 1996, the DPJ had gradually grown and expanded, taking control of the Upper House, the House of Councillors, in July 2007. After two years of confrontational politics, the 2009 election win meant that, for the first time since 1955, the LDP have no control at all in …

Students' perceptions of clinical attachments across rural and metropolitan settings
For many years, medical students at the University of Sydney undertook their clinical clerkships in traditional metropolitan teaching hospitals, which were regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for clinical training. In 2001 the university established a rural clinical school at which increasing numbers of students now complete a significant proportion of their medical education. The aim of the study reported here is to examine students’ perceptions of …
