Micro-morphometry of cereal and non-cereal pollen using LM, CLSM and Fesem
One of the most important criteria to distinguish wild grasses from those of cultivated ones lies in their pollen micro-morphological characteristics, which has proven to be an immensely useful tool in reconstruction of the past human influence and paleoecology. The investigation of 22 species of cereal and non-cereal pollen using Light Microscopy (LM), Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM), and Field Emission Electron Microscopy (FESEM) is a…
Mythological projections and ecofeminist discourse
The interaction of nature and man’s imaginative projections has culminated in nature being given manlike appearance and characteristics marking an evolution of mythopoeic tradition. As a fundamental life supporting tool, myths and mythology projected nature as sacred and integral to cosmic order while projections like nature deities, fertility goddesses, and guardian gods symbolizing creation and destruction have created binaries. Ingrained in my…
Investigating historical attribution
By 2019, a long brick platform with some structures was exposed when the Thamirabarani River, the southernmost river in the city of Thirunelveli, dried up. The civic society rejoiced at the discovery of the exposed structure as it was thought to be the palace of the first capital city of the Pandya dynasty, an ancient Tamil dynasty of southern India. Two bricks were removed from the structure to determine their ages using the luminescence dating …

Vegetation diversity in response to monsoonal variability in the Eastern Himalaya, India over the past ~13 000 yrs
Monsoon precipitation plays a crucial role in shaping the diversity of vegetation in the Himalayas, both in terms of temporal and spatial distribution. While palynology has traditionally been employed to reconstruct the past climate of the Himalaya, there has been limited understanding of how monsoon-related changes affect the structure and distribution of vegetation. To address this, we analysed pollen data from a 3 m deep sedimentary profile in…
An assessment of the correlations and causations of palaeo-hydroclimatic variability in India’s monsoon-dominated Central Himalaya
The Indian Central Himalaya Region (ICHR), the northern topographic front of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), is an ideal location to study topography-climate interactions because two weather systems—the ISM and mid-latitude westerlies (MLW)—create distinct eco-climatic regimes from tundra (north) to tropical (south). The region’s paleoclimatic studies show considerable climatic variations since the late Pleistocene. We evaluated 29 paleoclimatic…

Presence and implications of petrogenic organic carbon in High Himalayan Crystalline lake sediment
Twelve lacustrine sediment samples from a relict lake in the Kalla Glacier valley were co-dated using AMS radiocarbon ( 14 C) and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating methods. In general, the radiocarbon ages of bulk organic matter were older by a minimum of 1500 years compared to (age depth) modeled luminescence ages after fading corrections. This is observed for the first time in the lake sediments of High Himalayan Crystalline zone. …
