Physicians, the industry and population health
In the 1840s, many doctors carried out autopsies of women who had died of childbirth fever. The doctors sometimes became infected with bacteria without knowing it. When they delivered more babies, they transmitted the infection to more women, causing more to die. When it was suggested to the doctors that they might be unintentionally carrying harmful bacteria they felt insulted and reacted with angry denials. Fortunately, since then our professio…
Do advertisements for antihypertensive drugs in Australia promote quality prescribing? A cross-sectional study
Print advertisements for antihypertensive medications in Australia provide some, but not all, of the key messages required for guideline-concordant care. These results have implications for the regulation of drug advertising and the continuing education of doctors
A sex-specific linguistic feature in a European dialect
PETER MANSFIELD AND PETER TRUDGILLAbstractIt is widely believed that while sex-preferential linguistic differencesare common in European languages, sex-specific differences, if suchphenomena occur at all, are confined to languages spoken in non-strat-ified, pre-industrial societies. In this paper we report on a sex-specificallophonic feature currently to be found in a dialect of modern Greek. We suggest that this feature is the result of a particu…

The British media and the middle east
I would like to begin by considering some general aspects of the business of reporting and commenting on Middle Eastern affairs. What is it like? How well has it been done? How well is it being done today? Here at the outset I must admit to a strong prejudice which places the press, steam radio, and television in order of preference as media of information on current affairs. I believe, for example, that a television documentary is more likely th…

Nasser and Nasserism
The Egyptian Free Officers who seized power in the near bloodless coup of July 1952 had been planning their revolt in secret for years against heavy odds. They had a clear idea of what they wanted to destroy in Egypt: the monarchy, the British military occupation, foreign political influence, and the corruption of Egypt's own public life. They also had a broad vision of the kind of society they wished Egypt to become. But they had had very little…
