Open-Technology Maneuvering in Digital Infrastructures
Open innovation within digital infrastructures is fueled by digital technology commons (DTCs), open source software, open hardware, and other open digital technologies that can be accessed with highly permissive licensing conditions. This chapter describes four maneuvers ecosystem participants use to benefit from DTC projects: Supporting, Sponsoring, Siphoning, and Safeguarding. Ecosystem participants Support DTC projects by contributing to them.…
Digital affordances, spatial affordances, and the genesis of entrepreneurial ecosystems
Research Summary: Entrepreneurial ecosystems command increasing attention from policy makers, academics, and practitioners, yet the phenomenon itself remains under‐theorized. Specifically, the conceptual similarities and differences of entrepreneurial ecosystems relative to, for instance, clusters, “knowledge clusters,” regional systems of innovation, and “innovative milieus” remain unclear. Drawing on research on industrial districts and agglome…
Analysis of the Brazilian Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
The objective of this study was to analyze the Brazilian entrepreneurial ecosystem in the light of the National System of Entrepreneurship - NSE theory, through the implementation of the Global Entrepreneurship Index methodology - GEI. The study indicates that Brazil has low quality average institutional interaction. However, social context is the main bottleneck in the national entrepreneurial ecosystem. Differences between the performance quali…

Academic engagement and commercialisation
A considerable body of work highlights the relevance of collaborative research, contract research, consulting and informal relationships for university–industry knowledge transfer. We present a systematic review of research on academic scientists’ involvement in these activities to which we refer as ‘academic engagement’. Apart from extracting findings that are generalisable across studies, we ask how academic engagement differs from commercialis…

Entrepreneurial Intent among Students in Scandinavia and in the USA
An application of the theory of planned behaviour is developed here to analyse factors influencing entrepreneurial intent among university students. The study provides a test of the robustness of the intent approach using international comparisons. The samples are from Finland (Helsinki University of Technology), Sweden (Linköping University), USA (Stanford University and University of Colorado, Colorado Springs), and the UK (London Business Scho…

The main problem with the interpretation of Finnish rock paintings is the significance of shamanism. After surveying the most shamanistic motifs in the rock art and Saami drums E. Autio concludes that there are other possibilities besides shamanism for construckting an interpretation of the rock paintings (the votive offer, mythological beings, etc.)
Evaluation of RTD in regional systems of innovation
This paper focuses on the evaluation of research and technical development (RTD) in regional systems of innovation (RSIs). It is argued that regional systems of innovation are distinctly different from national systems of innovation, and, thus, different approaches are called for in the evaluation of RSIs. The most relevant aspects of RSIs, from the evaluation perspective, relate to their largely tacit and context‐specific character. In this pape…

The snake and zig-zag motifs in Finnish rock paintings and Saami drums
In articles about Finnish rock paintings particular attention has been paid to the significance of shamanism. The emphasis on shamanism leads in practice to the conclusion that a composition in which there is a man and a snake, or a snake like zig-zag figure, depicts a shaman and his helping animal. The explanation follows the traditional concept of arctic shamanism. However, the use of shamanism as the most significant basis for interpretation d…
