Towards a Philosophy of Narco Violence in Mexico
This book explores the politics of narco-killing and public attitudes to violence and death in the Mexican Drug War. It examines questions such as the culture of human sacrifice, the religious princip
My Space/Mi Espacio
This article analyses evangelical identity politics and more generally religious competition in contemporary Mexico through a specific focus on the construction, dissemination and imagination of space. The imagination and occupation of a particular space determines the specific identity of its followers. Since the identity-space construct is primarily anchored in the political, religious, economic and funerary contexts in most societies, these fo…
The Missionary Position
The purpose of this article is to critically examine the politics of religious conversion in India. Since Christianity is the main religion espousing and conducting conversion in ever-larger numbers in India, my focus, in the following pages, is to interrogate the debate surrounding this particular undertaking and the attendant conflict dynamics. This study is organized according to the following framework. First, it situates religious conversion…
Theorising ‘small’ and ‘micro’ state behaviour using the Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal
The aim of this paper is to examine the normative justification of ‘small’ and ‘micro’ state behaviour. Whatever theoretical position one assumes in order to examine the issue of small state performance, some pertinent facts appear fairly consistent including their vulnerability to external forces, inability to interact effectively with the outside world, and relative backwardness. Adopting a comparative approach for the consistent elaboration of…
An introduction to the ‘small’ and ‘micro’ states of South Asia
To date, there is no systematic, general study of small and micro states in South Asia. This introductory article to a special themed issue of Contemporary South Asia explores the definitional issues relating to small and micro states. In particular, it seeks to identify the key characteristics of these states and enquire about their attributes. Although the classification and categorisation of states undermines the sovereign equality principles …
Rain on a parched land
The Tamil insurgency in Sri Lanka is one of the longest running ethnic conflicts in recent years. The ethnic war involving the government forces and rebels, which lasted from 1983 to 2002, claimed some 64,000 lives – most of them civilians. With peace talks held in earnest between the disputants it appears the two-decade long conflict may finally be over. Cessation of hostility, of course, poses even greater challenges – notably in post-conflict …
A Nation in Exile
This essay is an attempt to explore the dynamics of Tibetan nationalism in diaspora. I do this from three perspectives. First, I examine the techniques of contemporary nationalist uprisings among displaced communities, and I argue that the nature and character of the nationalism-in-exile is determined to a great extent by the cooperation between the community within Tibet and those outside it. Secondly, I analyse the situation where a displaced c…
Subaltern and the civil war
In the past decade and a half there has been a steady rise in left‐wing violence in South Asia, confined mostly to India and Nepal. The key characteristics of this type of uprising are: (a) it is rural/agrarian in nature; (b) there is a strong element of ideological presence; (c) it targets a certain class, the state and its institutions; and (d) victims of this uprising are both civilians and officials (now estimated to be over 20,000). While bo…

Post-war reconstruction has become a dominant feature of Western political discourse and a key policy concern since the 1990s. While there is an acute need for informed debate between political scientists and practitioners engaged in such activity, this requirement is often ignored. From a practical perspective, most post-war reconstruction initiatives have, in recent years, been mired by lack of donor support or by no reduction in the dangers th…
The Centrality of Kashmir in India-Pakistan Security Dynamics
The politics of secessionist conflict management in India
How compatible are multinational states and their autonomy-seeking communities? Do minorities have a right to secede? What is the nature and dynamics of contemporary secessionism? What are the favoured techniques followed by a state to counter secessionist uprisings? In this essay, taking India as the case study, I explore answers to these questions. I suggest that the changing attitude of the international community toward secessionism as a righ…
