Effects of a cafeteria-based sustainable diet intervention on wellbeing at a large German hospital
This worksite cafeteria-based diet intervention yielded nominal improvements in mental and physical wellbeing among customers; this could be mediated by increased adherence to the PHD. These trends warrant verification in larger-sized intervention studies with more intense intervention dosages. Our findings underline the importance of sustainable food environments for planetary health. The protocol was registered at the German-Clinical-Trial-Regi…
Sex and the Social Order
‘Sex and the Social Order: Gender and Sexuality in Modern Britain’ is a second‐year optional module for history students at the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE). The module examines histories of gender and sexuality from the mid‐nineteenth century to the present day, providing a wealth of accessible primary material and a diversity of scholarship for students to engage with. This article reflects on the space we have attempted to …
Can we model cultural ecosystem services, and are we measuring the right things
Cultural ecosystem services (CES), a key aspect of nature's contributions to people, remain a challenge to incorporate into decision making. One contributing factor is the difficulty of defining and describing these, due partly to: ongoing poor understanding of what drives people to interact with nature, a lack of appropriate data to quantify these interactions, and basic difficulties in measuring and modelling the complex array of social, psycho…

Judicious Opioid Prescribing and Overdose Management
The rates of misuse of prescription opioid medications and opioid-related overdose have dominated conversation across the nation. There is a shifting focus to teaching health professionals at the undergraduate level about their role in the opioid crisis and opportunities to help patients and families affected by opioid use disorder. 1,2 However, there are currently no objective or standardized methods to evaluate medical students’ ability to navi…
Sending out an SOS
We examine relationships between the start of rainy season (SOS) and sub-national grain (white maize) market price movements in five African countries. Our work is motivated by three factors: (a) some regions are seeing increasing volatility SOS timing; (b) SOS represents the first observable occurrence in the agricultural season and starts a chain reaction of decisions that influence planting, labor allocation, and harvest—all of which can have …
‘There wasn’t all that much to do … at least not here’
Stan was born in 1911 in a small village near the north Somerset coast. When recalling his life in the countryside, he felt that ‘there wasn’t much to do in the evenings ... at least not here’. Drawing upon evidence from personal accounts of growing up in the south-west of England in the early twentieth century, this article examines memories of youth in the countryside, with a particular focus on the leisure lives of young people and their exper…
Milk Money
In 2014, the bioscience corporation Medolac Laboratories partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative, signing a Commitment to Action to increase breastfeeding rates among African American women. Medolac proposed to pay women in Detroit, Michigan, to donate their excess breast milk, arguing that women would breastfeed longer and earn enough money to delay reentry into the workforce. The program spurred resistance in the city of Detroit, where cri…
Exploring trends in wet-season precipitation and drought indices in wet, humid and dry regions
This study examines wet season droughts using eight products from the Frequent Rainfall Observations on GridS database. The study begins by evaluating wet season precipitation totals and wet day counts at seasonal and decadal time scales. While we find a high level of agreement among the products at a seasonal time scale, evaluations of 10 year variability indicate substantial non-stationary inter-product differences that make the assessment of l…
Using out-of-sample yield forecast experiments to evaluate which earth observation products best indicate end of season maize yields
In East Africa, accurate grain yield predictions can help save lives and protect livelihoods. Regional grain yield forecasts can inform decisions regarding the availability and prices of key staples, food aid, and large humanitarian responses. Here, we use earth observation (EO) products to develop and evaluate subnational grain yield forecasts for 56 regions located in two severely food insecure countries: Kenya and Somalia. We identify, for a g…
The streets have been watched regularly
The York Penitentiary Society, a charitable female reformatory in York, aimed to transform ‘fallen’ women in the city into useful citizens through institutionalisation, domestic training, and moral and religious instruction. The Penitentiary focused on isolating its ‘inmates’ from wider society, but its moral reach extended far beyond the high walls of the Refuge, and the young women confined within. This article examines the York Penitentiary So…
Distinguishing southern Africa precipitation response by strength of El Niño events and implications for decision-making
December–February precipitation in southern Africa during recent El Niño events is studied by distinguishing circulation and precipitation responses during strong and moderate-to-weak events. We find that while both strong and moderate-to-weak El Niño events tend to dry southern Africa, the pattern and magnitude of precipitation anomalies in the region are different, with strong El Niño events resulting in rainfall deficits often less than −0.88 …

The climate hazards infrared precipitation with stations—a new environmental record for monitoring extremes
The Climate Hazards group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) dataset builds on previous approaches to ‘smart’ interpolation techniques and high resolution, long period of record precipitation estimates based on infrared Cold Cloud Duration (CCD) observations. The algorithm i) is built around a 0.05° climatology that incorporates satellite information to represent sparsely gauged locations, ii) incorporates daily, pentadal, and monthly …
I am the baby's real mother”
A New Dimension of Health Care
Not Ready to Make Nice
The story of motherhood in popular culture has never been a simple one. Cross-cut by race, class, and sexuality (and, importantly, marital status), interwoven with changing psychological and biological theories and fantasies, tied up with nation-building and citizenship claims, images of motherhood remain both template and signpost upon which we project our desires for kinship and care and our most vexed understandings of womanhood and femininity…
