An Epistemology of the Envelope
Using the retrospective form that is memoir, this creative essay explores the retro practice of letters-in-envelopes in the context of epistemology, especially interrogating how knowledge is situated in time and in gender. The topics that reverberate in the essay include instructions for selecting and addressing envelopes; Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Purloined Letter,” with its interpretations by Derrida and Lacan; Heidegger’s influential Being …
Kissing Doesn’t Kill
“kiss me,” Cecile commands. She is standing against the bedroom door in her underpants and a ripped undershirt. The Saturday morning sun—which slants at its unique Saturday angle—pierces the cracks in the bamboo window shade and refracts off the pink wall. I can hear Cecile’s soft breathing. I can hear seven-year-old Colby’s snorts of sleep in the next room. I can hear my own heart.
Summer Solstice
Summer Solstice Ruthann Robson (bio) Instead of Stonehenge, that megalithic mystery, I explore pebbles by a modest sea. Vacation canceled: "There's been a death in the family." The tour books purchased last autumn still cast their shadowy theories: a clock or calendar, a tomb once made of timber, a stage for ceremonies, and certainly the place to be on the longest day of the year. Yet even now, even here, playing with rocks and stones, the fervor…

A Mere Switch or a Fundamental Change? Theorizing Transgender Marriage
Focusing on the legal cases that have been litigated in the United States, and making references to popular culture, this article considers whether marriages in which one of the partners is transgendered necessarily challenge or necessarily reinforce heterosexual hegemony.

Striving to Be Selfish
In "Striving to Be Selfish," Ruthann Robson explores the different kinds of selfishness it takes to be a writer and a dyke, especially the necessary focus on the higher self. Distinguishing the writer from the author (and the dyke from the lesbian), she argues that there is an almost spiritual dimension to the practices of writing and sex

Resisting the Family
Mother
The legal category “mother” operates restrictively and punitively to “domesticate” lesbian existence. Our domestication is the reason that we have difficulty thinking beyond the category “mother.” I explore how “mother” is used by both lesbians and nonlesbians within the legal system. In order to ensure lesbian survival on lesbian terms, we must strategize theories that do not preserve the dominant legal paradigm thatcodifies “mother,” even if th…
