  • “It's like a flower

    Open Access•Benjamin L Robinson, Dan McClure et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2026

This paper is the first to examine the ethical dimensions of integrating smart monitoring technologies into household-scale biogas digesters in Kenya. As the international development sector increasingly turns to digitalisation and “smart” systems to improve energy access, the risks of reinforcing inequities, data exploitation, and marginalisation become more pronounced. In this paper, we explore the ethical dimensions of smart metering for house…

  • Philosophical Investigations into Figurative Speech Metaphor and Irony

Ernie Lepore, Matthew Stone et al.•ARTICLE•ProtoSociology•2014

This paper surveys rich and important phenomena in language use that theorists study from a wide range of perspectives. And according to us, there is no unique and general mechanism behind our practices of metaphor and irony. Metaphor works in a particular way, by prompting the specific kind of analogical thinking And, irony works in its own particular way, by prompting new appreciation of the apparent contribution, speaker or perspective of an u…

  • Roberto Esposito and the Biopolitics of Property Rights

    Open Access•Matthew Stone•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 9

The nexus between property and subjectivity is at stake in various pressing contemporary debates, two of the most pertinent being on the separation of human body material into the status of property, and on the rapidly changing ways we think of virtual entities and places in proprietary terms. This intersection of questions of ownership and of personhood has naturally provoked a necessary discussion on the biopolitics of property. This article se…

  • Law, Ethics and Levinas's Concept of Anarchy

    Matthew Stone•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Law Journal•2011

Jurisprudential debates on the place of law within the concept of anarchy are limited. Welack thorough arguments on whether law is negated by this concept, or whether anarchy requiressome kind of specific legal organisation. This article seeks to help enliven such discourse by exploring Emmanuel Levinas?s writings on the subject. Levinas?s account of anarchy as anirreducible and emancipatory ingredient of human subjectivity has the nuance capable…

  • Levinas and Political Subjectivity in an Age of Global Biopower

    Open Access•Matthew Stone•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2010•Cited by: 1

A common way in which to apply Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophy to legal and political theory is through an “inverted” liberalist model, whereby the pre-political ethical duty to the other is politicized by the state, institutions, and rights. This paper argues such a position is untenable in the light of a progressive reading of sovereignty, and takes on the task of thinking an approach to Levinas and politics in the wake of law’s complicity with gl…

  • Is semantics computational

    Mark Steedman, Matthew Stone•ARTICLE•Theoretical Linguistics•2006

    1. Introduction Both formal semantics and cognitive semantics are the source of important insights about language. By developing precise statements of the rules of meaning in fragmentary, abstract languages, formalists have been able to offer perspicuous accounts of how we might come to know such rules and use them to communicate with others. Conversely, by charting the overall landscape of interpretations, cognitivists have documented how closel…

  • Current and New Directions in Discourse and Dialogue

  • Anaphora and Discourse Structure

    Open Access•Bonnie Webber, Matthew Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2003•Cited by: 16•References: 2

We argue in this article that many common adverbial phrases generally taken to signal a discourse relation between syntactically connected units within discourse structure instead work anaphorically to contribute relational meaning, with only indirect dependence on discourse structure. This allows a simpler discourse structure to provide scaffolding for compositional semantics and reveals multiple ways in which the relational meaning conveyed by …
