Freedom from Democracy
This article examines what McKnight (2018) refers to as “progressive populism” and argues that the rise of progressive populism in contemporary western democratic societies is directly related to the emergence of neoliberal governance regimes and the rise of global corporate power. Utilizing insights from both scholarly literature and popular commentary it outlines the rising counter assault by global corporations and governments since the 1960s …
Firstaboveequals? Assessments of the Abbott Prime Ministership 2013–2015
The question for me is not just what others might have done wrong but what I could have done better or differently to have made the coup less likely (Abbott 2016c, 20) The past year has shown us wh
So Many Open Doors
In the present study we examine gender stereotyping in the traits and images emphasized by candidates in state judicial campaigns. Content analyses were conducted on televised campaign advertisements from state supreme court contests in election years 2008–2010. Our analyses indicate that women referenced masculine traits and were shown with masculine images in their ads more than men. In addition, the gender makeup of the race made a difference;…

The competing meanings of “biopolitics” in political science
The term "biopolitics" carries multiple, sometimes competing, meanings in political science. When the term was first used in the United States in the late 1970s, it referred to an emerging subdiscipline that incorporated the theories and data of the life sciences into the study of political behavior and public policy. But by the mid-1990s, biopolitics was adopted by postmodernist scholars at the American Political Science Association's annual mee…

Comparison of Nurse, System and Quality Patient Care Outcomes in 8-Hour and 12-Hour Shifts
BACKGROUND: Many nurses desire 12-hour shifts. However, there are concerns about implementation. OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the effects of 8- and 12-hour shifts on nurse, system, and quality patient care outcomes. METHODS: We used a cross-sectional design with data collected from multiple sources in 2003-2004, including a nurse survey and administrative and patient records. We studied hospital nurses and patients in general adult wards, with…

Leaders’ Debates and Presidential Politics in Australia
During the second of the two 1996 nationally televised ‘great debates’ both rival leaders were momentarily flummoxed by questions unexpectedly directed at them by the moderator. Clearly neither the Prime Minister nor Opposition Leader had rehearsed answers to questions about abortion, crime and national gun law reform. The televising of debates between the leaders during the campaign period is a relatively recent innovation, with its roots direct…

A typological analysis of the population participating in this program indicates that, beyond the quest for additional revenue, contractual adhesion is also motivated by a concern for protecting nature. Although very limited overall changes have been made in farming, changes in input do provide evidence that…

Spaces of Democracy
Locke and Feminism on Private and Public Realms of Activities
Feminist critics of Locke perceive a conflict between his promise of political liberty and equality and women's individual and social circumstances. Many feminists point to an incongruence in Locke's thought between formal political rights and the substantive inequalities women experience in a variety of social relationships. Emphasizing Locke's liberal distinction between private and public, these feminists explore how women's actual personal, m…
