Opioid prescriber screening practices to detect risk for developing opioid use disorder
Little is known about how clinical providers assess risk for opioid use disorder (OUD), especially when considering prescriptions for opioid-naïve patients with acute pain. While formal screening tools exist, they are not widely used, and may not be sensitive enough to identify low-risk individuals who are susceptible to developing an OUD. Therefore, we sought to understand opioid prescribers' perspectives on their screening practices. We conduct…
International Physical Activity Questionnaire
BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a global concern, but diverse physical activity measures in use prevent international comparisons. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was developed as an instrument for cross-national monitoring of physical activity and inactivity. METHODS: Between 1997 and 1998, an International Consensus Group developed four long and four short forms of the IPAQ instruments (administered by telephone inte…
Thomas Harriot's Translations
Elizabethan mathematician Thomas Harriot pioneered the systematic solution of higher- into lower-order equations through the device of setting them equal to zero. He performed another kind of dimensional translation in developing techniques of spherical trigonometry and projective geometry for navigation. Harriot was also, at the age of 25, given the task of breaking the language barrier between the English and the Algonquian people of what is no…
Gender and Sexuality in Discourses of Managerial Control
Mining scholarship has focused chiefly on capital developments, labour relations, changing technology, and global markets, ignoring the equally critical aspects of gendered organizations and their role in shaping the subjectivities of workers and managers. This article probes how gender and sexuality organize a mine site through organizational design and productivity management. It looks behind the rhetoric of equal opportunity, glamour mining an…
A service users’ research advisory group from the perspectives of both service users and researchers
Much has been written about the importance of involving service users in the research process. Far less is available about the experience of involvement from the perspective of service users themselves. The present paper is a joint account by service users and researchers of a service users' advisory group set up to support and advise a project to evaluate diabetes services in Bradford, UK. The establishment of a separate advisory group for servi…

Effects of a national mass-media campaign on physical activity participation
Regular physical activity has an important role in disease prevention and the promotion of positive health. Population-wide campaigns to promote physical activity are a potentially important health promotion strategy to increase participation, but little is known about their effects. A mass-media campaign, supported by a range of community events, was conducted by the National Heart Foundation (NHF) of Australia in 1990 It comprised television ad…
The landscape of melodrama
This article is concerned with the kind of scenic environment and stage settings used to depict the rural landscape (and the people in it) in the popular English 19th century melodrama, and examines the function of both the sublime and picturesque forms of stage landscape, as well as that of natural catastrophe
