  • Resisting disenfranchized grief in the context of perinatal death: A qualitative study on the social labor of bereaved mothers

Sabrina Zeghiche, José López et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2026•References: 14

Perinatal death remains socially unevenly recognized, despite important changes in practice and culture. This qualitative study examines how bereaved mothers negotiate everyday (non)recognition across interactional settings. Using a grounded theorizing approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 23 mothers in Québec and analyzed how expectations of recognition shape social action. We identify a threefold, explanatory typology of social labor:…

  • A hermeneutic dialogical understanding of data reuse across different access regimes

    Open Access•Inma Aleixos-Borrás, José Julián López et al.•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2024•References: 2

Policy and scholarly discourse emphasizing the panacea of Open (research) Data shapes expectations, and directs and legitimizes investments in data technologies and infrastructures. This is driven by the hope that Open Data will quicken the pace of research and innovation through data reuse, and that they do so more effectively than other access regimes, such as stewarded and proprietary data. Drawing on Leonelli's relational framework and Gadame…

Open Access•Marta Peña, Noelia Olmedo Torre et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The alteration of the educational model caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected all university faculty equally. This work explores the academic, digital and gender inequalities caused by the pandemic on the teaching and research staff of a technological university for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines in Spain, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC). The study considers an anonymous…

  • Interrupting the Human Rights Expansion Narrative

    Open Access•José Julián López, José López•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2020•References: 51

In the growing field of the sociology of human rights, the notion that human rights might best be understood as the expansion and/or supersession of citizenship rights has taken root, as has the more generalized taken for granted 'backstories' to the effect that human rights are the product of a unique postwar consensus. In this article, I argue that these assumptions are more encumbrance than assistance when it comes time to sociologically grasp…

  • Nanomedicine and personalised medicine: Understanding the Personalisation of Health Care in the Molecular Era

Open Access•Mathieu Noury, José Julián López et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Globally supported by public policy and investment, nanomedicine is presented as an ongoing medical revolution that will radically change the practice of health care from diagnostic to therapeutic, and everything in between. One of nanomedicine's major promises is that of personalised medicine, enabling diagnostics and therapeutics tailored to individual needs and developing a truly ‘patient‐friendly’ medical approach. Based on qualitative interv…

Open Access•José López, Marta Meana et al.•ARTICLE•Cultura Ciencia y Deporte•2006

The purpose of this paper was to determine the effect of the race walking exercise on the structures of the foot, so much in the immediate responses to the practice as in the long term training adaptations. Footprints were recorded tree times using the photopodogram methodology on a sample of 17 young race walkers. The first one and second footprints were carried out in both feet at the middle of the season, in rest and after 30 min race walking …

  • Enrolling the Social Sciences in Nanotechnoscience

    José López•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2006

This article presents a reflection on the challenges and opportunities associated with the now ubiquitous requests inviting social scientists to participate in ELSI (Ethical, Legal and Social Implications) type frameworks, attached to large science projects such as nanotechnoscience. It elaborates on some ideas presented in a panel discussion titled "On the Social and Ethical Impacts of Nanotechnology" in Winnipeg at the Canadian Sociological and…

  • How sociology can save bioethics . . . maybe

Open Access•José Julián López, José López•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2004

This paper argues for the importance of a broad sociological engagement with bioethics. It begins by considering why sociologists should be interested in bioethics and then goes on to explore the cognitive critique of bioethics developed by ethnographers. Some of these authors have also suggested that a more robust bioethics might emerge through the incorporation of the tools of ethnographic analysis. In this paper, it is argued that this is an i…

Of the donated blood, 0.2% of the units were discarded for being positive for HTLV-I or HTLV-II, and the prevalence found among the donors was 0.11%. Sexual transmission between an HTLV-positive donor and a partner or spouse was less frequent than was mother-to-child transmission. At present in Venezuela, blood banks are not required to screen donations for HTLV. Given our results at the MBBC, we believe serious consideration should be given to i…

  • Metaphors as Principles of 'Visuality: Seeing’ Marx Differently

Open Access•José López, Jose Francisco Gonzalez Lopez•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This article argues that, in contemporary sociological debates, questions about social structure are too frequently posed within the 'structure and agency' problematic. Some of the limitations of this problematic are briefly discussed, and it is argued that it is necessary to open up new theoretical and conceptual spaces where more productive questions can be posed. One possible avenue is contained in the recognition that since social theory is a…
