  • Corpus approaches to news translation: We can do better than comparable

Open Access•Silvia Bernardini, Adriano Ferraresi et al.•ARTICLE•Across Languages and Cultures•2024

This contribution addresses the challenging issue of building corpus resources for the study of news translation, a domain in which the coexistence of radical rewriting and close translation makes the use of established corpus-assisted analytical techniques problematic. In an attempt to address these challenges, we illustrate and test two related methods for identifying translated segments within trilingual (Spanish, French and English) sets of d…

  • Constrained language use in Finnish: A corpus-driven approach

Open Access•Ilmari Ivaska, Silvia Bernardini•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2020

It has been suggested that second languages and translated languages are constrained by an interplay of several linguistic systems. This paper reports on a data-driven quantitative study on constrained Finnish. We detect linguistic phenomena that distinguish constrained from non-constrained Finnish across constrained varieties, first/source languages, and registers. Implementing a two-phase method, we first detect key quantitative differences of …

  • Simplified or not Simplified? The Different Guises of Mediated English at the European Parliament

Open Access•Adriano Ferraresi, Silvia Bernardini et al.•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 27

In this article we describe a framework for the corpus-based comparative investigation of interpreting and translation, illustrating it through a study of simplification across different modes of language production and across different language pairs. We rely on EPTIC, a corpus featuring plenary speeches at the European Parliament in their interpreted and translated versions, aligned to each other and to their source texts in English Italian and…

  • Aprendizagem Por Descoberta No Ensino De Línguas Para Estudantes De Tradução

    Open Access•Silvia Bernardini, Leonardo Pereira Nunes•ARTICLE•Belas Infiéis•2017

Este trabalho tece uma revisão acerca da noção de aprendizagem por descoberta através do uso de corpora, inicialmente proposta nos anos 1990, e avalia seu potencial e suas implicações para a formação de tradutores na atualidade. Discute-se o arcabouço que subjaz essa abordagem no que concerne o aprendizado movido por dados, e promove-se uma articulação entre a instrução baseada em projetos e a instrução focada na forma, ambas em ambientes inspira…

  • Discovery learning in the language-for-translation classroom: Corpora as Learning Aids

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2016v36nesp1p14This contribution reviews the idea of discovery learning with corpora, proposed in the 1990s, evaluating its potential and its implications with reference to the education of translators today. The rationale behind this approach to data-driven learning, combining project-based and form-focused instruction within a socio-constructivistically inspired environment, is discussed. Examples are also pr…

  • Practice, Description and Theory Come Together - Normalization or Interference in Italian Technical Translation

    Open Access•Silvia Bernardini, Adriano Ferraresi•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 26

This article aims at the characterization of specific features of translated texts. Taking a classroom experience as its starting point, the use of anglicisms in original and translated computing texts in Italian is examined. The corpus used for this purpose has three components: originals in Italian, comparable translations into Italian, and their English source texts. The frequency of three sets of English words - overt lexical borrowings, adap…

  • Designing a Corpus for Translation and Language Teaching: The Cexi Experience

    Silvia Bernardini•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2003

Building resources for the education of future language mediators is a widely felt need in Europe today. Translation and interpreting schools have experienced a boom in the past two decades (Caminade & Pym, 1995), with the consequent need to adapt language teaching practices and develop translation teaching approaches tuned to these specializa- tions. A number of researchers working in this setting (see, e.g., the collection edited by Aston, 2001…
