  • Digital vulnerabilities

Open Access•Anne Kaun, Maria Arnelid et al.•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2026

Recent global events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, wars and migration streams, have highlighted the promise of digital infrastructures while also showcasing how dependent we are on digital systems for accessing welfare services such as healthcare, social services and education, as well as for accessing public service media. Notably, in the context of welfare provision, different people and social groups are affected in distinct ways by such d…

    Open Access•J Velkova, Ericka Johnson•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•2025

Critical Data Studies Meet Sociology life today is data driven -and the basis of data collection.Industries and institutions gather more digital data for their potential to generate value and action than ever before. These range from health data (Stevens et al. 2018; Vezuridis & Timmons 2021) to environmental data (Deitz 2023; Vardy 2020) to "alternative" data which are cleaned, repackaged and sold for use by industries in need of predictive model…

  • The ontological politics of synthetic data: Normalities, outliers, and intersectional hallucinations

    Open Access•Francis Lee, Saghi Hajisharif et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 48

Synthetic data is increasingly used as a substitute for real data due to ethical, legal, and logistical reasons. However, the rise of synthetic data also raises critical questions about its entanglement with the politics of classification and the reproduction of social norms and categories. This paper aims to problematize the use of synthetic data by examining how its production is intertwined with the maintenance of certain worldviews and classi…

  • Investigating healthcare workers' technostress when welfare technology is introduced in long-term care facilities

Open Access•Sofia Thunberg, Ericka Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Behaviour and Information…•2024

Welfare technology has recently reached older adults in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). Many Swedish municipalities are introducing emerging technologies such as virtual reality, robotic assistive devices, and social robots in LTCFs as part of everyday care. However, not only older adults are affected by these deployments. Healthcare workers are left to master these technologiesâ and integrate them into existing care practices. Previous resear…

  • Affective Corners as a Problematic for Design Interactions

Open Access•K Harrison, Ericka Johnson•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2023

Domestic robots are already commonplace in many homes, while humanoid companion robots like Pepper are increasingly becoming part of different kinds of care work. Drawing on fieldwork at a robotics lab, as well as our personal encounters with domestic robots, we use here the metaphor of “hard-to-reach corners” to explore the socio-technical limitations of companion robots and our differing abilities to respond to these limitations. This article p…

    Open Access•Jenny Gleisner, Ericka Johnson•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2023•References: 50

This article is about the feelings - affect - induced by the digital rectal exam of the prostate and the gynaecological bimanual pelvic exam, and the care doctors are or are not instructed to give. The exams are both invasive, intimate exams located at a part of the body often charged with norms and emotions related to gender and sexuality. By using the concept affective subject, we analyse how these examinations are taught to medical students, b…

This article looks at the implications of emotion recognition, zooming in on the specific case of the care robot Pepper introduced at a hospital in Toronto. Here, emotion recognition comes with the promise of equipping robots with a less tangible, more emotive set of skills – from companionship to encouragement. Through close analysis of a variety of materials related to emotion detection software – iMotions – we look into two aspects of the tech…

An exploration of how global pharmaceutical products are localized - of what happens when they become ’glocal’ - this book examines the tensions that exist between a global pharmaceutical market and the locally bounded discourses and regulations encountered as markets are created for new drugs in particular contexts. Employing the case study of the emergence, representation and regulation of Viagra in the Swedish market, Glocal Pharma offers anal…

Contextualized against other critical work on Viagra, our analysis shows how the commercial discourse embeds the ED patient into a network of actors. Three separate actors are co-constituted and enrolled by this …

An examination of the use of medical simulators shows that they contain traces of the one-sex body model found in pre-Enlightenment anatomies. The simulators present the male body as 'male including female' rather than 'male, not female'. Only when female sex organs are relevant to a practice, as in gynaecology, does a simulator need to become 'female, not male'. The widely held modernist understanding of sex and gender as binary categories is ac…
